My beautiful girl aged 4 lost the use of her back legs yesterday (29th March). Today she had an MRI and surgery to remove damaged discs (30th March). She is now in recovery. I am an absolute mess & could use some words of encouragement to get me through this awful time.

Welcome to Dodgerslist. My name is Paula what is yours? There is no doubt about the emotions that go along with first learning your dog was born with disc disease. Self education with this disease is critical. Knowledge is to make sure the right things are being done for best recovery. And for yourself, knowledge lets you step out of a very scary place…"the unknown" and the toll it takes on your mind. Get ready to fight this disease with this current episode and in the future by knowing all things IVDD. There is no better place to start than on our main web page with "Overview: the essentials" and then read all you can as soon as possible. Here's the link www.dodgerslist.com/healingindex.htmDo you have her recovery suite setup...lots of great ideas from many members here: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/cratesupplies.htmDo know that it IS in the cards for Molly to get back to enjoying life again. This is major surgery, so of course there will be a recuperation period. Dr. Isaacs was kind enough to go through many questions we have about surgery. I think you will get alot out of reading what he has to say: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/surgery.htmWhen you learn more how Molly is doing please share with us.

Molly's surgery went well & she is now out of pain. She has no use of her legs yet but the surgeon is hopeful that she will regain this. She starts physio & hydrotherapy this week x

Good to hear that Molly is pain free at this point. Your job now is to learna ll about IVDD and prepare for her homecoming. Paula gave you some great links to get you started. Please keep us posted on her progress and let us know how you both are doing. We are here to help

I already know a fair bit about IVDD as its something I researched before & after getting a dachshund. The shock for me is how sudden it was. Only a week prior she was given a clean bill of health at the vets. Even that morning there were no signs & then it escalated massively. We spoke to her surgeon on our visit yesterday & he was very positive. He thinks she is regaining some feeling in her legs already which is fantastic. She has started physio & is due to start hydrotherapy shortly. All we can do now is pray. She is staying at the rehabilitation centre for the rest of this week where she is getting the best care possible x

Good for you for learning about the potential for IVDD when you adopted your girl. You are right though, we are never prepared for the devastating suddeness of it's onset. Molly is already showing improvement and as the surgical swelling subsides you can be prepared to see even more progress. There is nothing like that first true tail wagging to lift your spirits sky high. Keeping you in thought and prayer

My name is Paula, what is yours? Glad to hear already neuro functions are returning!! Given time very likely there will be even more nerve healing to take place. Actually Molly is very typical of the dogs born with this disease. The owner and the vet first realize the dog was born with IVDD with the first signs of pain. Typically that happens at age 4-7 years old. Discs start prematurely aging at one year old and by 4-7 the disc can no longer act as a cushion between the vertebrae and bounce back like it should... instead the disc tears. Let us know when Molly comes home, what the surgeon directs for PT and for crate rest. Would you consider helping a new member having to make a quick decision about surgery? We have a directory where you can share surgical costs: dodgerslist.boards.net/board/10/guidelines-posting State: Hospital: Address: Cost: Date of surgery: What was included in cost (MRI?, days stay, ER? PT? meds for home, sling, etc.) Comments:

My name is Charlotte! We visited Molly last night & she wagged her tail! Her surgeon is really pleased with her progress and so are we. He said the damage was very fresh when he operated which makes sense as she hasn't been in any pain at all prior to Friday. Trust me, if she had been we would have known about it. When I describe Molly as a Princess I am not exaggerating! Haha! We are due to visit again in a couple hours. I'm not sure I can help with the info you asked for as I am in the UK. We have insurance for Molly so we are hoping her care will be covered but if not, we will cross that bridge when we come to it x

Hi Charlotte,
We have members from the UK so Vet and surgeon recommendations from you would be welcome.. Just list the name of the hospital, contact information and let people know the wonderful care she got. This way if someone from the same area as you has a similar situation, they can look in our Vet recommendation topic and see your post and know which Hospital to take their beloved dog to.. dodgerslist.boards.net/board/10/guidelines-posting
I am so happy that Molly has made such wonderful improvements so quickly. Nothing like that wonderful tail wag especially after losing function before surgery..
M Shih Tzu Tyler sends his greetings to Molly,he had disc surgery a year and 3 months ago.. His story is in my signature line below.
Hope Molly is home with you soon..
