Hi my name is Rosalie and new to these message boards not even sure how they work. But I'm deeply sadden on what happened this past tue March 25 th 2014 I will never ever forget! My 15 year old dashund/ beagle mix name Kobe all of a sudden he wasn't walking , I thought it was something that I had done , by trying to block him from jumping ,the next thing I saw he wasn't walking . I immediately called the vet and was seen an hour later . The vest said looks like a slip disk or herniated disk. She said he was too old for surgery and it would be an up hill battle and truth be told I cannot afford the surgery ! So the vet sent me home with pain meds prednisone pepsid!
Kobe hide legs drags and his paws buckle under! It's so sad to see, as many of you already know ! This site has giving me some hope ! I went out and got a larger crate for Kobe and I'm keeping in him the 24/7 I take him out only to pee and poop that's it . He does sometimes pant a lot is that a sign of pain or could it be form the meds ! Can someone please let me know ! I'm so happy that I found this forum, thank you pray for my Kobe and all other dogs . Thanks again rosalie

Bless Your Heart! I totally feel your pain. My baby has a ruptured disc in his neck and the last two weeks have been heartbreaking to me as well. I was told that panting was a sign of pain. My Oscar only does that when he has had an "episode". I pray your Kobe can heal and if not, I pray for you to have the strength to get through the days and weeks and months ahead.

Welcome Rosalie! We are glad you found us. Panting is a side effect of Prednisone and some pain meds. It also can be a sign of pain and you would see other confirming sigs of pain such as shivering, trembling, yelping when picked up or moved, reluctant to move much or slow to move, tight tense tummy. A few more details can help us best support you -- Is there still currently pain at any time today - shivering, trembling, yelping when picked up or moved, reluctant/slow to move head or body, tight hard tummy, not his normal perky self?-- How much does your dog weigh? What are the exact names of meds currently given, their doses in mg's and frequencies? Has there been any change in the dose of Prednisone, less mgs or given less often, what date? -- Eating and drinking OK? How are poops today- normal color and firmness, no dark or bright red blood? -- Currently can your dog wobbly walk? move the legs at all? or wag the tail when you do some happy talk? -- Do you find wet bedding or leaks on you when lifted up? -- If there is pain or neuro diminishment, dogs can benefit greatly with acupuncture or laser light therapy. These therapies can be be started right away to help relieve pain and to also to kick start energy production in nerve cells to sprout. So if this therapy is in your budget, seek out a holistic vet. ahvma.org/Widgets/FindVet.html www.serenityvetacupuncture.com/index.php/faq_/ [one vet's overview/prices] Chiropractic is not recommended for IVDD dogs. The Forum is a great group to lift your spirits and ask questions. The real work of reading to be a savvy IVVD dog owner is on our main website.
