FOOTWARE:The webpage for socks is www.woodrowwear.com and the socks are called Power Paws. The woman who started it is named Lorraine and she couldn't be nicer to work with. When I was trying to figure out the right size for one of our dogs, what I ordered was wrong. I called to discuss it and she sent me the correct size and asked me to just donate the pair I had to my local vet, which I did. The socks stay on and I think the secret is to size correctly. I've found that the correct size looks too small but they are really stretchy.

Karla, welcome to Dodgerlist. Is the pup who needs the scoot sack totally off of either 8 weeks of crate rest or 6 weeks post op before being allowed to scoot about? Do tell us a bit more about this dog and the date of the disc problem. If the disc episode has well since passed 6 or 8 weeks, then a protective garment would be a good idea. Some dogs scoot with legs in front like a frog and other with legs to the back like a seal. Check out #6 to see the options for sew and no-sew garments. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/AfterCrateRest.htmDoes your dog stay dry or do you find urine leaks in bedding? Is he on any meds at this time....what are the names of them? Can he wag his tail if you do some happy talk to him?

I think an easy walk harness would be fine. I use a similar harness on my Jeremy - a Gentle Leader. As long as the stress is on the chest and not the neck, it would be fine. My surgeon OK'd the Gentle Leader for Jeremy.

Can you add Buddy Belt to your harness recommendations? They are so great - perfectly designed for dachsies and more! shop.buddy-belts.com/UPdated 11/4/2015: Hi! The Buddy Belt is a soft leather harness (they do make new plastic ones for the more budget conscious). I have bought many over the years for my two weenies and must say the Luxury belts are made of the softest leather. Buddy Belt does carry liners buddy-belts.com/liners/ that you could use. I've never needed lining for the Luxury leather. I really can't say enough about the softness and durability of these harnesses. I only buy new ones for fun new colours for my girls; we've never worn one out! Even with Emmie's IVDD this harness keeps her secure without stressing anything. [editor's note: you just did add a recommendation...thanks!]

SCOOTING GARMENT: Our little Slinky is 9 years old and has been paralyzed in his back end for 4 years now. After MANY trials and errors I was able to design a drag bag pattern the stays on Slinky and keeps his Huggies size 4's on. I am trying to share this with as may people as possible. If your wiener dog is anything like ours nothing will stop him and buying all the supplies for him is not cheap. So please share this pattern with EVERYONE you can who is in this situation not rich. recycledmiracles.blogspot.com/2014/07/100-free-tutorial-to-make-paralyzed.htmlMeet Slinky, he is 9 years old and has been paralyzed for 4 years. Due to a vet's lack of treatment he will never walk on his hind legs again or wag his tail. Slinky has no idea he is paralyzed and to prove to he chased a raccoon out of our house last night. His favorite game is fetch and tug of war and running whenever he gets the chance :-)

Danielle, thanks for sharing your easy to sew pattern with recycled fabric. Normally, with full and timely expressing of 4-5 times a day, a dog stays dry and does not need diapers. Can you tell us how often you express, if you can feel the bladder as it goes almost flat at the last stage of expressing? Have you seen our tips on expressing both urine and for poop: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/Expressing.htmwww.dodgerslist.com/literature/Expressing.htm#poopWe like to keep signature lines to one line to save on scrolling.

I'd like to recommend the Hug-a-Dog harness made by Dachshund Delights (dachshunddelights.com). You provide measurements, and they will make a custom harness in your choice of MANY colors and patterns of fabric, or white or black mesh, with trim (again, many choices of trims). For an added cost, you may add reflective tape, a pocket, or embroidered name and/or phone number. (Also, they're not just for dachshunds!)

Harnesses:On the BuddyBelt harness ... Misti is a Mini-Doxie presently at 15.5 pounds ... we rescued her in May of this year and she weighed a whopping 22.4 pounds. So yes, she's lost weight ... but there is still some loose skin involved and she just underwent back surgery (11-3-2015) ... for this type of harness ... we want one that lasts but also that would not put any strain on her back but that wouldn't rub under her legs/chest area - is this harness padded in any way? Hug-a-dog harnesses are amazing!!!!! Here's the site www.dachshunddelights.com/Hug-A-Dog-Harness_c_60.html

HARNESSES:Nancy, IVDD dog owners should look for a harness that does not wrap around the neck nor sit on the soft tissue of the neck. The Hug a Dog wraps around the neck. Look for a harness that has these features shown in the below graphic where the harness is not on the neck. Finding the right harness for your dog is like us finding the right brand of jeans for ourselves. One brand may fit our bodies better than another.... same with a harness for your dog. You will have to try it on your dog and see if it works for her body type. I don't think any harness would strain the back. The problem areas to watch for are where the pulling stress will be. Again avoid those harnesses that sit on the soft neck area.

HARNESSES:I would like to share an excellent harnesses: The harness brand is Help'Em Up , helpemup.com , check out the website for pictures and videos, you can save money on the walking leash by using a regular leash go over the back handle and pull to the center to connect the front part(which is how I do it). If the dog's legs still has over 60 percent strength to stand but need some lift and balance, this is the best one, my vet recommended and I got it from the vet for $105. My is medium size. The larger one will cost a little more. I bought a sling that cost me $50 but It is useless to me ,my opinion sling is good for dogs has less than 50 percent normal strength, it is difficult to put on and messy (straps & poop mess) it only hold the back, you cannot walk the dog because the dog will get excited most of the time and drag both the legs and you, so it end up not walking but dragging. The Help Em Up is very light weight. You can leave it on the dog at all time, only take it off when it need to be washed. They can still do their business without mess! FOOTWARE:
Happy New Year from Nathan! He is doing very well but does have trouble with his back feet getting a full step--the top of the paws will start to bleed in certain areas and the toenails a very short. This is a big problem on pavement (grass or soft surfaces he is ok) I have been using PAWZ which are awesome! They are a little tough to get on at first but now he lays on his back and lets me put them on easily. They stay on and after many uses will usually get a hole in them where his feet rub. Great product! They are about $14 for 12.

FOOTWARE: I used the rubber Pawz with my former dog but they are not working well with the dog that is staying here for rehab. Because he sometimes drags, they come off. and they are x=small...and he's not a tiny dog. I'm wondering if anyone has tried baby grippy socks with vet wrap to hold them on? Amy and Rdy (who is doing wonderfully!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

FOOTWARE:Amy, let us know how the baby socks with grippy bottoms work. Holding them on with self sticking tape sounds good, it has some stretch to it, so good to watch not applied too tightly to impair circulation. You can always patch the sock where there is wear with some duct tape. Grocery stores now have many similar self sticking tapes on the shelves than the brand name 3M Vetrap. The self sticking tape is pictured below incase anyone is looking for it at the grocery store, in lots of colors and patterns.

HARNESSES:Danjellis, look where the harness sits on your dog. For an IVDD dog the needs of the harness are: it should sit as shown in this picture: ** Notice where the Hug a dog harness fitting/measurement picture shows the harness sitting:

HARNESSES:
Have once for each [HELP 'EM UP] of my back dogs. I love them so much! The option to add the back portion or take it off makes it very versatile. My male loses his footing so it allows us to grab him and get him back on track. I highly recommend this as well!!!

A quick question about shoes. Spike loves his cart, but last week his foot was bleeding. I took him to the vet the next day and he had worn one nail down to the quick. So I got some relative soft shoes for when we are on the street, but he doesn't put any weight on his back legs now. Any suggestions as he loves his walks, and although these protect his feet, they are not encouraging him to put them down.

FOOTWARE:
What I used for my Frankie during the period when he would sometimes scrape his foot on the sidewalk was Paws rubber boots for dogs. They are made of thin rubber and Spike may be able to feel the street through them and put his feet down.

BELLY WRAPS:
If anyone else needs male wraps, I've found a brand named "Teamoy" on eBay that works really well for Perry.
They're about $12-16 for three, washable, have a big Velcro square for adjustable closure, and are very absorbent.
I've bought 9 so I always have spares.

REAR HARNESS:I wanted to tell you about a harness to help while your dog is rehabbing. It is call “walkabout back end harness”. You put their hind legs in it and it goes over the top of their hips. It has Velcro and also a strap to buckle. Then it has two straps you hold to keep, your dog steady and from putting too much weight on his legs. We were told to use it for our Rowdy’s walking exercises. It is a handy contraption. You can’t be in a hurry though. We ordered ours off Amazon and a size small. Rowdy weighs about 15 lbs. I believe they have all kinds of sizes. And it doesn’t interfere with restroom functions.
