Lola started on the gabapentin this afternoon, 300mg capsule 1 tablet every 8 hours. The vet also read up on tramadol and said it could take 10 to 14 days to work? I had understood it was immediate. Lola did have some moments of the odd head movement this afternoon, it seems to happen when she is in a certain position, curled back and head down? I tried putting a pillow in for her, but, she sits up when I put the pillow in and doesn't seem to like it. I hope the gabapentin and tramadol mix work well for her. I also picked up the sucralfate in case it is needed, although, her stool is still well formed and colored.
interesting info I found on gabapentin from dodgers list link, Gabapentin should not be abruptly discontinued after long term use as seizures can be precipitated. Instead gabapentin should be gradually tapered off over a couple of weeks.
Oral antacids will hinder absorption of gabapentin into the body by up to 20% so it is important to separate administration of these two medications by at least 2 hours.
I will have to time Lola's meds accordingly.

Hi Wendy,
I have never heard that Tramadol would take 10 to 14 days to work..At the right dose it should work within an hour. Now anti inflammatories can take from 7- 14 and sometimes up to 30 days to work.. Wonder if they are thinking it's an anti inflammatory??
Sending prayers that Lola feels better with the Gabapentin on board.. So sorry about your bites as well. I hope you are ok. Has your swelling gone down??
Comforting thoughts and healing wishes..

Thanks Pauliana, my hand is getting better, I did see my doctor today, he said he did not need to report, and, he understood why the incident occurred. He wants to keep an eye on it but thinks I will heal without antibiotics, the next 24hrs will tell. i was surprised when the vet read that from her med book, maybe if it is used in different doses for different ailments?

Glad your doctor thinks the bites will heal without antibiotics. Hope it feels better soon!
I wonder if the Tramadol 10 to 14 days to work was involving another ailment? If you find out let us know.
You have been doing such a good job with Lola.. You are so dedicated and caring.

There was blood coming from Lola's mouth, I looked inside and it appears to be an ulcer like sore on her upper left lip which is bleeding. Is this a side effect from the meds she is on? Is there something I can do for this?

I am unaware of any of her meds that could cause oral ulceration. Give the Vet a call to be safe. The note about the abrupt discontinuation of gabapentin causing seizures most likely refers to gabapentins original use as an antiseizure medication, that can cause seizures to start up when abruptly discontinued. It was originally developed for treating epilepsy. I hope Lola's mouth heals up quickly. (((hugs)))

Wendy, the gabapentin as StevieLuv remarked is with a dog using gabapentin for epilepsy.
Also do know that the anti-acids referred to re: hindering absorption are the ones containing magnesium or aluminum salts. Sucralfate as you may remember reading does contain aluminum. Pepcid AC however is an antihistimine and contains nothing to reduce absorption -- so there is no timing involved with it other than to give it 30 mins prior to Pred. If you need to use sucralfate you will want to read up on the timing with this med with other meds, food and Pepcid AC (blocks acid production).
Let us know what the vet says about the mouth ulcer.
