We discovered Dogerslist last May after our youngest Lola (6yrs) went down with IVDD. She did not respond well to crate rest and meds so she had surgery in June. She has made a full recovery and is doing great. My concern now is when we go for a walk she pulls hard and I haven't been able to break her of it. She wears a harness not a collar. My question is are we risking future injury when she pulls against the leash? If so, is there a special harness available to reduce risk of injury? P.S. Dogerslist is a fantastic resource for information re: IVDD and the board is great too. Before last May, I had not heard of this disease but after Lola started showing symptoms, I found your website and read virtually every word on it including the links. There is no doubt in my mind that the information I found here helped Lola. Thank you.

We are very delighted our resources help Lola last summer!! The concept about the fit is you want the neck part of the harness to sit on the boney structure of the shoulders not the weaker soft tissue of the throat. Any pulling should be against the strong upper chest/shoulder area. Here are pictures showing how a harness should sit on the shoulders and chest. It took two different brands to find the right fit for each of my dogs. I think you may want to consider working with her to retrain on the pulling issue. Avoid using a retractable leash as that actually teaches and rewards a dog for pulling. This article can give you some ideas on how to go about training not to pull. www.siriuspup.com/pop_leash.htmlDon't forget to help us educate about disc disease: 1. hand out our free literature: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/litorder.htm2. have friends and family learn about IVDD with "the" DVD: www.dodgerslist.com/store/DVDorder.htm3.
