Hello ~ I am new here and in distress over leaving my 4 1/2 yr. old doxie at the clinic last night for surgery.Annabelle was diagnosed with IVDD this past July. She was put on crate rest and meds, we built her ramps to use to go out side to potty and used a sling type blanket to pick her up. She got better for a few months and then about 3 weeks ago it started bothering her again. Last night is when her back went out on her, we rushed her to the University Of Georgia vet hospital where the confirmed what we suspected. Her disc rupture and at the snap of a finger she went from a wobble walker to no walking and surgery was the only answer. We left the hospital at 11:30 last night. They called us at 1 am to let us know she was going for her imaging and then to surgery. They called back after 5am to inform us that the surgery went well. We have studied a lot on IVDD. They gave us a 90% recovery rate for Annabelle. I am waiting on the next update call.

Welcome to Dodgerslist. My name is Paula what is yours? I'm sorry to hear another disc problem, but so glad to hear you were able to get her help quickly. You probably have a good recovery suite for when she comes home…this checklist may have a few ideas/tips to make the post-op rest period go a bit smoother: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/cratesupplies.htmAnother good thing to do is a list of questions… on discharge day you want all to be answered in the excitement of bringing Annabelle home. Here is a good starter list: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/dischargequestions.htm and Dr. Isaacs' answers may trigger questions for your list too: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/surgery.htm#dischargeWe'll be looking forward to more information once you have Annabelle home. IF there is anything else we can help with please ask away. -- Once home is pain fully controlled dose to dose of pain meds? - shivering, trembling, yelping when picked up or moved, reluctant/slow to move head or body, tight hard tummy?-- How much does Annabelle weigh? What are the exact names of meds sent home with, their doses in mg's and frequencies? -- What did the surgeon direct for crate rest and for home PT? -- If there is pain or neuro diminishment, dogs can benefit greatly with acupuncture or laser light therapy. These therapies can be be started right away to help relieve pain and to also to kick start energy production in nerve cells to sprout. So if this therapy is in your budget, seek out a holistic vet. ahvma.org/Widgets/FindVet.html www.serenityvetacupuncture.com/index.php/faq_/ [one vet's overview/prices] Chiropractic is not recommended for IVDD dogs.

Hey it me again ~ Kelly. I am soooooo very happy to report that Annabelle is recovering great. The surgeon said she has never see on doxie recover this well. She was able to come home 3 days ahead of time. She went from no use in her back side to a few days after surgery walking and potting on her own. She was sent home with Perd., pain meds and antibotics. She is off all meds and has been for a while. She went this past Tues. to have her staples removed and once again great report we will not have to take her back in for a check up. Her gate is fine. Our biggest issue is her wanting to run and play now which I have to say it a great thing to deal with. I would advise any one who see's a sudden collapse in there dog like we did to seek attention right away. This is what made the difference in Annabelle... she had a 90% recovery rate but had we waited it would have dropped to 10%. I am a happy doxie mommy!!

You're an inspiration for us! Lana was also given a 90% chance for a full recovery but she's at a slower pace than Annabelle. Best of luck!
