Hi,
I've been reading the forum which has been useful, but just wondered if any one from the uk any feedback/ suggestions on post op care which they could share Summary
one of my 2 daxi's , 3yrs old was taken to the vet in early dec as she was out of character (whined at the bottom of the stairs when I was doing household chores upstairs) as with most daxi's she is nosey and likes to be around you. Upon picking her up and examining her we could not work out what was up with her as she was fine climbing down stairs but did nor want to climb up, so guessed it was attention seeking as she made no sound when picked up.
Nevertheless, to put my mind at ease I made a vets appt the following day, by this time she was a bit unsteady on her left hind leg. After two injections (morphine based and anti imflam) I was advised she had suspected IVDD. She was placed on crate rest and I closely monitored her. By the following day she appeared unsteady on both hind legs so went back to the vet who referred her to a specialist in Newmarket. Porscha was admitted and had an MRI scan which concluded "T12-13 invertebrateical disc extrusion lateralised to the left causing moderate spinal cord compression and contusion" she had a left sided hemilaminectomy with T12-13 and T13-L1 fenestrated. two days after surgery I was able to take her home (along with various meds', inc medacam, tramadol, omeprazole, synulox). I was ordered 6weeks crate rest with a further 4weeks on a lead. Being a stubborn daxi after a week she Was restless at being restrained. I purchased 'bedtime biscuits' with valerian rote and camoline to calm her ( these appeared to work, I had no joy with rescue remedy (human and pet versions). I rested her in her dog bed which I carried around when I was in different parts if the house, she was not left alone as I was able to wfh for this period
she has recovered well and a few days later did not need a sling to help her walk and was able to go to the toilet fine (albeit a bit bouncy on her legs when squatting).
She he had her 6weeks post op check today at the local vet, Porscha is
walking ok, but her right hind keg is visibly weaker then her left.
As she is now in the 4 weeks lead phase, my conservatory has been turned into a dog den (with foam matting over the floor tiles complete with toys and a gated room divider. The vets has recommended taking her for
short walks 3 times a day (2-3mins) to build her muscles back up, in addition to physio/hydro therapy.
I am now back working in the office so she is in the
secure area along with her brother fir a few hrs at a time.
Porscha is on light food to avoid weight gain, however has put on 0.4 kg from lack of exercise (treats/biscuits/filled kong from keeping her relaxed and settled) so just wondered if anyone has any tips of what else I can try that I can purchase in the uk.
We have had a few 'bolts' when she has caught us off guard when
sitting in her bed on the sofa with us (mainly due to the mail man) so we are still having to be villigent.
The other daxi (her brother and former litter mate) has been fine- full of beans- very active jumping, playing,
climbing stairs etc. I am worried that he too could suffer from IVDD so am trying to stop him jumping! As I am not sure how his sisters disc's went
It is very exhausting being a career, and I long for the day when she can
use her dog flap to take herself out to the garden to go to the toilet. I guess patience is the key factor here......
I just wondered if anyone had a daxi with the same disc's affected who could share some tips and/or time frames for recovery (if so did they return to normal, or were they left with lasting effects)
many thanks
Emma xx
