Kathy, welcome to Dodgerslist. So glad you joined, you are among friends here.. Can you give us some more information about Pebbles so we can better help you? What medications is she on, the dosages and frequencies given? Is she taking anything to protect her stomach from the anti inflammatory such as Pepcid AC? Is the Vet aware of her not eating? If not please let them know right away and ask them to prescribe Sucralfate to heal her stomach.. For most dogs Pepcid AC does protect the GI tract by reducing stomach acids. Some dogs just need more protection. So I would HIGHLY recommend advocating for a 2nd stomach protector to be on board tonight: sucralfate it is an Rx item and requires timing with food, with Pepcid AC and other meds. Those dosing details here: www.marvistavet.com/html/sucralfate.htmlWhat date did you start the 100% STRICT crate rest 24/7 only out to potty for a full 8 weeks, which is the SINGLE most important thing you can do to help your dog-- it is the hallmark component of conservative treatment. Carried in and out to potty. No laps, no couch, no sleeping in bed with you, no meandering, scooting or dragging around during potty times. No baths, no chiro (aka VOM). In other words do everything you can to limit the vertebrae in the back from moving and putting pressure on the bad disc. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/CrateRRP.htmCan you give us a bit more in essential information about your dog: -- Is there still currently pain? Signs of pain are holding the head in an unusual position, head held high or nose to the ground, shivering/trembling, not wanting to move much or moving gingerly, yelping, tight/tense stomach muscles, arched back, holding leg up flamingo style, not wanting to bear weight on the leg, just not their usual perky-interested-in-life self. The not sleeping may be a sign of pain. -- Currently can your dog wobbly walk? move the legs at all? or wag the tail when you do some happy talk? -- Can your dog sniff and squat and then release urine or do you find wet bedding or leaks on you when lifted up? -- Eating and drinking OK? -- Poops OK - normal color, firmness, no dark or bright red blood? Laser light therapy, acupuncture and electroacupuncture which sends a microcurrent of electricity to and from acupuncture points (which are really big nerve bundles), can be very beneficial at helping to re-establish the nerve connections in the body. Any one of these therapies can be started right away if in your budget... they not only help relieve pain and inflammation but will kick start nerves to begin regeneration. Find a holistic vet here: ahvma.org/Widgets/FindVet.html www.serenityvetacupuncture.com/index.php/faq_/ [one vet's overview/prices] NOTE: Chiropractic is not recommended for IVDD dogs. We have a very helpful DVD that will educate you, your family members and friends, pet sitters, etc. about caring for an IVDD dog. Please see the link in my signature line Hugs and prayers..

Hi Kathy. I'm so sorry to hear about Pebbles. In order to help you we need some information, please answer each of these questions in as much detail as you have available. We love information, we love details. What breed of dog is Pebbles? How old is Pebbles? What is Pebbles current weight? You say Pebbles "hurt herself". Can you describe what she did to hurt herself and what symptoms she is having now? Is Pebbles able to walk, move her legs, wag her tail? Does Pebbles show any signs of pain? Any of the following are symptoms of pain shivering/shaking, reluctance to move, reluctance to put weight on a leg (holding it up when standing), whining/crying, restlessness as though she cannot get comfortable. Do you currently have Pebbles in a crate 24/7 no exceptions aside from potty breaks. Are you carrying her out to potty and allowing only the fewest of steps in a small area for her to pee/poop then carrying her back inside? Is Pebbles on a leash and harness when you take her out to potty? What date did Pebbles hurt herself? What date did you take Pebbles to the vet? What did the vet say when Pebbles was examined? Were you told this is a back issue? Was Pebbles vomiting when you saw the vet and if not has he been alerted? Please answer the same for the diarrhea? And also for the not eating? Does the vet know of these three symptoms and what did he say? Is there any blood in Pebbles poop? This can appear as bright red or as black in her poop depending on where in the GI tract the bleeding is occurring. Is Pebbles on any medications? If yes, please list names, dose in mg's, how often you are instructed to give each, how often you are actually giving each and when was the last dose of each. Is Pebbles able to pee and poop on her own or is she having accidents? Please answer all these questions and in as much detail as you can possibly provide. It is very hard for us to give advice or help until we know all the details. Please also be sure you visit our information pages and start reading...I'm presuming this IS a back issue since you have found your way to our page. Start here: www.dodgerslist.com/literature.htmInformation on crate rest: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/CrateRRP.htmWhile you are waiting for us to respond to the answers you provide please read everything you can on our pages and feel free to ask questions if there is anything you do not understand. Anxious for your reply.

You have an emergency that has not YET been properly taken care of. Kathy, good communications with us as well as with your vet is going to be exceptionally important. I know you must be upset, things can be more quickly addressed if we have more critical information from you to help you advocate for Pebbles. MEDiCATIONS doses and frequency? We dont' have a clear picuture, the dose of the meds in mgs and how often you give them tells us a more complete story. Please fill us in: Tramadol: how many mg's for each dose. How many times a day are you to give it? Prednsione. how many mg's per dose and how often? Has there been a reduction in the dose, in the frequency? Methocarbamol: ?mgs; ?x a day?STOMACH protectionPebbles is showing DEADLY signs of prednisone intolerance. This really can't wait. You have to advocate very strongly for the Rx item sucralfate tonight if at all possible.. The 2nd tummy protector you get at the grocery store tonight…and get it in her tonight, asap. 5mgs of Pepcid AC (famotidine) now and thereafter every 12 hours. Keep the vet in the loop on the Pepcid AC. How much does she weigh?Pain control is #1Tramadol has a short length of time it is effective. With pain it usually will be prescribed every 8 hours. So if you are still seeing pain, you will need to adovocate for giving it more often with the vet.
Healing just can not get fully underway until pain is in control. If tramadol and methocabamol are still not controlling pain, then the vet still has other options. Gabapentin is the 3rd pain med to be added to the mix. So let us know if you are seeing shivering, yelping, won't move much.
We are anxiously awaiting the details of what the vet prescribed and that you do have stomach protection on board (sucralfate AND Pepcid AC).
Set up handy email alerts if anyone replies to Pebble's thread:

Kathy, I am so glad you joined Dodgerslist. These folks are great here and will help you a lot. You have a beautiful dachshund and I pray she gets better soon. The more information you give them the more they can help sweet Pebbles get better soon. I know that getting her pain under control and giving her a stomach protector immediately are very important. I went through the same thing with Dixie Belle and this place saved her life. I did not know the importance of these 2 things until I joined this group.

Kathy,
Let us know please what is going on. Pebbles is having diarrhea and vomiting because of side effects from the Prednisone because her stomach was not protected by being on Pepcid AC 30 minutes before the Prednisone and then every 12 hours.. Prednisone should be also given with a meal and since she is not eating, her tummy had nothing to protect it from the acid Prednisone produces.. She could have a bleeding ulcer or worse a stomach perforation..It can be deadly as Paula said..She needs to be in the hospital and it is imperative she be on Original strength Pepcid AC (available at the grocery store and drug store..She needs 5mg or half a tablet every 12 hours.. She also needs the Sucralfate available only from the Vet.. It is a weekday, get her in to her Vet right away..
She has lost function with her leg because her disc is pressing on the spine and causing nerve damage.. That can be helped with crate rest and lack of movement and her medications in the right dosages to help the pain and swelling..
Can a rescue help you with costs? We are so worried about both you and Pebbles, please talk to us..
Act now to get her help for her tummy and her pain...

Hi Kathy my name is Maureen. I am so sorry that your sweet Pebbles is having such a hard time. It is so hard to see them hurting like this. Take a deep breath -we will help all that we can. It sounds like you and Pebbles are battling 2 major issues right. Pain which is caused by the swelling that the prednisone is taken to reduce swelling along with pain meds for comfort, and the vomitting/diarrhea which is caused by the prednisone. So here are some things that you can do. 1) call the vet - Pebbles needs help now, if your current vet won't give you adequate pain meds and stomach protectors then call another one. Don't take no for an answer. Get loud, get insistent! 2) to help calm her tummy and intestines take her off of food right now until you talk to the Vet- you can give her ice cubes to lick to help keep her hydrated or frozen cubes of broth. Don't give the prednisone without a stomach protector. She needs an anti inflammatory badly so that is why you need to call your Vet. We are here for you. Keeping you in thought and prayer. (((Hugs)))

Here is some info in an effort to help you with the bills so you can get the care Pebbles needs: Walmart, Target, and many grocery store pharmacies now offer the $4 per each generic med prescription. Ask your vet to help you financially by writing an Rx to the one nearest your home. No or low interest credit for veterinary costs can be obtained from Care Credit. You find out online if you qualify: www.carecredit.com/faqs.htmlOther links for financial help: www.dodgerslist.com/links/financial.htm As Paula asked, please let us know the dosage and frequency given of each medication Pebbles is on. The more information you give us, the better we can help you and Pebbles. Blessings to you both.
