Hi everyone, my name is Alicia, from Singapore. I have a JRT who was diagnosed with IVDD on 26th Oct. She had her surgery on 28th Oct. She lost DPS within 24hours. And we were advised by our surgeon that her left hind leg was a Grade 5 and her right hind leg was a Grade 4.
Her disc had ruptured and was compressing on the spinal cord, causing some bruising and blood clots. Surgery was performed to remove the materials and blood clots.
We took her home on 5th nov. and she's been on crate rest ever since.
Everyday, i'll massage her muscles and move her joints. She started on her acupuncture on 23rd nov. And we have had 4 sessions till date.
She started kicking her hind legs, after her first acupuncture session. After the 3rd, she tried to stand on her own. When she gets excited, she will kick her hind legs, like as though she wants to run and move around normally. However the movements seem spastic. The acupuncturist said that was because the nerves are dead. Is that what most canine experience?
I have been 'towel-walking' her, one human to hold the towel, another human who will be following behind her, holding her hind legs and mimicking the normal walking movements, for the brain to relearn how to walk.
I have also been bringing her to the beach for swims, also, one human holding on to her, the other human moving her hind legs.
Recently, we have been hit by a major problem - urinary incontinence. I had left my job ever since she was diagnosed, and since we have her home, I have been expressing her bladder every 3-4hours.
However since last Tuesday (10th Dec), she started leaking very very badly. And I could not feel her bladder anymore. I tried expressing, but nothing comes out.
We visited the vet, and she was given antibiotics for UTI. However it has been a week, and no signs of recovery.
Yes the leaking slows down a little, but we still find her in small puddles of urine. And it gets worse when she gets excited, it just splurts.
What should we do? The antibiotics that we have is CLAVET 250MG, 1/4 tab twice a day.
I am really at a lost. She was all fine, looking positive and now hit with urinary incontinence.
Appreciate some advice.
Thank you.
