Hi - I am trying to move over from the other Dodger's list board, where I so appreciate all of the support and advice.
Becker has been on conservative crate rest since Feb. 19. He eventually ended up on prednisone (now down to one 5mg per day) methocarbomol, (125 mg every 8hrs) tramadol (25 mg) every 8 hrs, Gabapentin (1 ml every 8 hours). 14 lbs.
We have also had 3 class 4 laser treatments, and are going again tonight. He has responded amazingly to these!!
My question is this: Becker developed a lick granule on his leg, and it is making him so crazy that the vet gave us an Elizabethan collar to put on him. Ever since he has been wearing the collar, he has been shuddering again. It is really hard to tell if the shuddering is pain or if he is upset about the collar. He comes right out of the crate, and is really wanting to walk around, so it seems that he isn't feeling pain, but the shuddering worries me... Our vet doesn't know what to think.
Any ideas? Has this happened to anyone else?
Thanks, Sharon

Hi Paula- Yes, I had already read that article. I know they are really tough to cure. It seems that the collar might be the best option for now. We are also leaving on a 10 day vacation starting Friday, and Becker will be with our vet's office in their small boarding area. They all love him there, and I know they will take good care of him, but I am SO sad and worried about leaving him. I know it is the best thing, though, because our vacation involves driving 1300 miles to Florida and back, and Becker is terrified of the car and shakes the whole time. I have al lot of guilt about leaving him, while is is down, though. It's just so sad to see him in his crate with that collar on.

Hi, just chiming in here, did the vet give you anything topical to put on the granuloma to make it less itchy? I also wonder if Benadryl will help? It must be terrible having something itch and not being able to scratch it. Perhaps you can talk to the vet about these options.
I know EXACTLY what you mean about feeling guilty about traveling without them. Then when we are on vacation...it seems all we do is think about our pups! lol. Such is love. Glad to hear your vet will be looking after him. I'd be sure to let all the techs know that he has IVDD, in case they aren't aware. Let's just hope the scientists are right about dogs not having a concept of how much time has passed. Best wishes, ~Lisa

Hi Lisa- Thanks for your reply! I forgot to mention that we are giving him Benadryl three times per day. We were told we could put neosporin or a cortisone type cream on it, too. So I'm going to get those today. The vet techs are going to be very busy taking care of him. Yes, I am hoping that he won't know how long we are gone!! He is just dying to get out of his crate and be held... I feel so bad for him. Thanks again! Sharon

Sharon, I forgot to mention EMT Gel: emtgel.com/whatitis/index.php The stuff is incredible. Reduces pain and rapidly heals wounds. I've used it on my own dogs. Comes in spray and gel. Please let us know how Becker does in the coming weeks. Have a great vacation! Best wishes, ~Lisa
