Hello! My 4 y/o dachshund Lo started to have trouble jumping on the furniture Friday 11/29. We thought maybe she was just sore so we started picking her up to get on and off furniture. Monday night 12/2 her back legs had a mind of their own like they were drunk and she could barely walk and then she began vomiting. The vomiting lasted all night. Tuesday am 12/3 I took her to vet and they said she had IVDD but her tail was still moving and her feet would move. Gave her a steroid shot and started her on decadron [dexamethasone] twice a day tramadol every 8 hours. They did not say anything about crate rest but after reading on here we decided to start it at 645 pm 12/3. Since Monday night however she has not peed or pooped, only vomits. When we took her outside before crating her and she tried to walk her back feet 'knuckled' and its a dragging movement. I'm worried this medicinal treatment won't work or am I getting too far ahead? How long should I give the no urination and no bowel movement? She will drink water and eat only a little bit. Any advice would be appreciated as I have had dachshunds in the past but this is the first one to do this.
UPDATE: Just a quick update while waiting for responses. I came home from work this morning and she was wagging her tail in her crate. She took her meds with crackers and did not vomit! She is drinking fine. However, she still has not urinated or had a bowel movement

Rachel, welcome to Dodgerslist, we are glad you are here. In the early days of learning our dogs have IVDD, everyone needs a shoulder to lean on while getting things figured out, dealing with emotions, getting up to speed on meds, what disc disease is, etc. Your job in the coming days is to become a reader so you become the confident leader of the health care team.... to discuss confidently various issues from medications to recognizing if suggestions of activity would be harmful to the healing disc. All that takes being a reader. Start on our main website with "Overview: the essentials" yellow button it will give you the degree of understanding you need right away…. as time permits continue to read all the orange buttons and the blue button "Disc Disease 101 core readings" to complete your education. Here is the link www.dodgerslist.com/healingindex.htm The DVD mentioned in my signature line is a great resource to have in your home for family and friends to understand Lo's disease, do consider ordering one. I'm EXTREMELY worried by the red flag warning signs of vomiting. Do not wait a minute more… her stomach must be protected right away. Notify your vet of the vomiting and ask for an Rx of sucralfate that your local pharmacy will have on hand. Also tell your vet you want to give Pepcid AC (famotidine) from the grocery story as long as Lo has no health issues with liver or heart. Decadron is notorious for the GI tract damage it can do…bleeding ulcers to life threatening perforated stomach lining. Please address this right away and then in the next post we can continue with the conversation. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/healingsweling.htmwww.marvistavet.com/html/sucralfate.html [sucralfate] www.petplace.com/drug-library/famotidine-pepcid/page1.aspx [Pepcid AC] We anxiously await hearing that both sucralfate and Pepcid AC on on board.
