We have a 13 year old Dachshunds. He just had his 3 back surgery. All by means of IVDD, no injuries or accidents. This one however is in the lower hind quarters and he is doing well with the surgery and post op, but he is unable to urinate or defecate. This was actually how we came to the 3 surgery in the fist place. We have him on several drugs to possibly help with bladder function, but nothing is happening after a week and a half. We are considering the Cystostomy surgery next, because we are not catherizing him 2 times a day for urine release. Any help or comments would be appreciated on the surgery and hopefully on the Cystostomy.

cstarnes, welcome to Dodgerslist. My name is Paula, what is yours and your doxie's name?
What was the date of the last surgery? Bladder function is a result of either the nerve damage the disc did or from temporary swelling from the surgery itself.
Surgical swelling usually subsides in 2 weeks or so.
Damage the disc caused the spinal cord, can take weeks, months or even close to a year to heal. Did you get a lesson on expressing for poop and for urine?
With more information we'll be in a position to support you.
-- Is there still currently pain - shivering, trembling, yelping when picked up or moved, reluctant/slow to move head or body, tight hard tummy?
-- What are the exact names of meds currently given, their doses in mgs and frequencies?
-- Currently can your dog wobbly walk? move the legs at all? or wag the tail when you do some happy talk?
-- Do you find wet bedding or leaks on you when lifted up?
-- Eating and drinking OK?
-- Poops OK - normal color no dark or bright red blood?
