Once we noticed our miniature dachshund Remy having problems with his back legs, we took him to the vet immediately. He was diagnosed with Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), but was still in the earliest stages. The next morning, he had no control over his back legs or tail, so we rushed him in again, this time for surgery. The doctor was able to do everything possible during the surgery, but recovery from this type of disease can take a long time, and we still aren't sure whether there was any permanent damage or not.

Uriah, welcome to Dodgerslist. I'm sorry to hear Remy had a disc episode. We are glad you are here at Dodgerslist. While personal fundraising posts are not allowed because so many here are under financial stress themselves, we do permit a signature one line in length.
What the forum has to offer you is priceless and that is support, creditable IVDD information to help you care for your dog and to work closely with vets. We'd love to learn more about Remy. Can you tell us this information so we can best support you:
--Is Remy home now? What day was his surgery?
-- Is there still currently pain - shivering, trembling, yelping when picked up or moved, reluctant/slow to move head or body, tight hard tummy?
-- What are the exact names of meds currently given, their doses in mg's and frequencies?
-- Currently can Remy now wobbly walk? move the legs at all? or wag the tail when you do some happy talk?
-- Do you find wet bedding or leaks on you when lifted up?
-- Eating and drinking OK?
-- Poops OK - normal color no dark or bright red blood?
-- What directives did the surgeon give for PT and for crate rest?

Thank you for your support! Remy is currently still at the vets, should be coming home later today. He had emergency surgery on 11/17. Remy was at a stage 3 when we brought him in and could feel deep pain and had some movement in his tail, after surgery it has declined and cannot feel deep pain, we are hoping due to swelling. I know of 3 meds he will be on which is Rimadyl, Hydrocodone, and Methocarbamol, we might more from bringing him home, I will keep it updated once I know more!

Uriah, there can be temporary neuro setbacks due to the surgical procedure caused swelling. In two weeks you'll have a clearer idea of the direction nerve healing is going in. It is still very early and lots of potential for healing. There are lots of things you can do to prepare for Remy's homecoming: -- jot down your questions so nothing goes unanswered in the exciting of discharge day. Here's a good start on that list of questions: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/dischargequestions.htm-- Good reading …answers to many post op questions our m embers have had…answered by Dr. Isaacs, board certified ACVIM (neurology) www.dodgerslist.com/literature/surgery.htmWe look forward to your next update on Remy!

Sorry for the slow update, we were able to bring Remy home last night. Doctor said we have a long recovery ahead, but he showed a tiny bit of improvement. He reacted slightly to the deep pain test after Remys leg started to shake, then the other one when he tested it. He has had some muscle spasms in his tail and rear legs, especially when we express his bladder. He just wants to sleep in his bed, which is fine by me, since we know he needs the rest to start healing. His appetite has been very small, only wants treats (go figure), and does not drink too much water. Please continue to keep him/us in your thoughts and prayers, as we need it badly.
