I am very familiar with Dodgerslist and the help I have found here is amazing. However, I am new to the forum and have a question regarding my IVDD dachshund, William. William had a grave case of IVDD in 2009, however he proved me wrong and now walks and runs. I still have to express his bladder and he has not regained the thought to lift his leg again. My question is how do I get a better control of his leakage in between expressing. He does not have a bladder infection. I have tried a band that goes around his waste but this never stays on regardless of what I tried. I've tried doggy diapers and once again, no luck. When I discuss leakage, I mean drips of urine, especially during times of excitement. This is an every day issue and my carpet can only take so much.
Are there any suggestions? I hope I posted my question in the right forum.

Hi Susanne, welcome to our new Forum. Can you tell us a bit more about William's current status. -- How often do you express him? I usually express Clark every 4-6 hours during the day. Right before company comes or other exitiing things I do express just prior to avoid him self expressing even tiny drops. -- Can you feel his bladder with your fingers….that is the last stage where the bladder is practially empty and you can almost feel the fingers of your other hand? Fully voiding will help to extend the time between expressings. -- Have you tried the sniff and pee test. Let William sniff an old pee spot and then see if he will choose to release urine there? That would show some bladder control returning. You may not see lifting the leg but maybe lowering himself?? -- Is he on any meds at this time? --Has there been a recent urinary analysis to proove no infection? Some UTI do not give us any symptoms such as odor or change in color.. it is the UA that identifes the infection. -- This type of garment is airy and claim to not slide off with activity. tinkletrousers.com/ I agree the enclosure of diapers can cause it's own problems and should be avoided.

Thank you for your reply. I take him out every 2-3 hours when at home plus just before any exciting moment that may happen. His vet tested him for UTI and said his test was negative. I do see him pushing his back side down almost like a female dog but never related it to urination but rather his legs needing a break. He was diagnosed in 2009 and was paralyzed from his waist to his back legs. However working with him he is now walking and running. However his back to legs appear to hop instead of the back and forth movement of a normal walk or run. I just don't know how to keep up on his drips when they are spontaneous even when his bladder is empty.
Again thank you, -Susanne

Bladder control is supposed to return then leg use. But sometimes the wiring goes wacky or does not work perfectly. It sounds like William's bladder control is just not 100%. Do look into a protective garment to catch drips, that can make a big difference to you in living with an incontinent dog. Did the Tinkle Trousers seem like it might work for you?

Yes, I am considering the tinkle trousers. Their price is rather high for my income but I need to try something. Thank you again for all your help.
