Is this still her current med list? What was the name of the antacid? We ask a lot of questions don't we! LOL This how we learn by asking and observing to better be able to help dogs in other countries and in general about IVDD and meds.
7kg/15 lbs 25 mg tramadol every 8 hrs 1 50mg gabapentin every night before bed and 7.5 kg dose of metacam once a day. antacid ?
Has the vet indicated when he would stop the meds to test if all the painful swelling in the spinal cord is gone?
Keep up the good work on 100% STRICT crate rest 24/7 only out at potty times for 8 weeks. I think with your care Poppy will have a very good recovery by graduation day!

we had stopped the metacam and went to a very low dose of tramadol. things were great. Her spine we were told, was holding its own . all was on the up and up. she was in the clear, so to speak. now. she has tweeked her kneecap.??!! and we are back on all meds. crate rest . and waiting to see if she needs to be sent to Vancouver b.c for knee surgery. her life is just not what I ever thought it would be . crated in pain and sad. on the bright side she was in the clear for spine surgery. I am devastated by this latest . there has also been no antacid they don't seem to feel its a problem. I am at the end of my emotional rope today. how long does this poor girl have to suffer from one thing or another? sorry everyone.. just hitting a bit of a low at the moment. we were in the clear.. I just don't understand?!!!!

Hi Tana, I am so sorry to hear about Poppy's knee. It doesn't seem fair, does it? Glad her back is in the clear though. I wouldn't risk the stomach and GI tract damage by not giving Pepcid AC (Famotidine) Prior to the Metacam. It is generally considered a safe-over-the-counter suppressor of stomach acid production for a healthy dog and good insurance. Dogs don't speak up at first signs of trouble like a person would. By the time we notice black or red blood in the stools, things can quickly go from bleeding ulcers to a life threatening perforated stomach. We ask that all members read about each med their dog is on or may take as a safety measure. I am just sick about it. we will add the pepsid ac. thanks again, I just think I'd fall apart if I didn't have this community to talk to. who knows the love we have for our fur babies and too, knows we would do anything for them to be well. All the literature the dr gave me , all refers to large breeds getting knee problems. could this all be result of her spine and wobbly walking?? just made things weaker and worse??

Patellar Luxation is the name if you want to learn more about it. Dachshunds are one of the small breeds that can be born with it. It is thought to be congenital and passed down genetically. So the breeder needs to neuter so as not to pass along the problem.

So a quick update... Poppy must be a "healer" she has avoided knee surgery , back surgery and is again on the mend. She is one strong little weenie. She is off all pain meds now . Her back is doing well and her knee is still in physio. But all in all we are really proud of our little trooper!! Thanks again for the support Hope to not have to update again for a long time... because that means she is doing well. Its been a crappy year, so we are ready for some good.
