Here we go again. This time last year my male dachshund Dash was almost done his crate rest. This evening he went down again. He doesn't seem to be in pain but he can barely stand. I am worried that if he can't walk I will have to help him urinate and I'm not sure if I can do it properly. My fingers are crossed that when I take him out he will be able to go. I have started him back on metacam with Pepcid for his stomach. Any other tips would help, but I have been through this before and pretty much know what to do. Thanks.

Pat so sorry to hear Dash is having another episode. Metacam is the anti-inflammatory to reduce swelling and the pain it causes… it is not a pain reliever. Do let us know specifically that you are not seeing shivering, reluctance to move or moves very gingerly, not his normal perky self, yelps, or a tight tense tummy. Glad to hear you are doing Pepcid AC…. 5mg 2x a day? And 30 mins before a metacam dose? Metacam given with a meal? Hopefully you have caught this early and with 100% STRICT crate rest 24/7 he can heal that disc and nerves will heal with time too. Be watchful of neuro functions and reporting them to the vet… you can review them here: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/healingsurgery.htmI would be best to review this information before getting a hands on top of your hands lesson in how to express the bladder. Keeping fingers crossed his nerves will not diminish. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/Expressing.htm
