If you and Angel feel comfortable starting say tomorrow, go for it. You can always go back to the dosage she was on if she shows signs of pain. This is one way to tell if she is ready or not.
Always glad to help!

Debbie,
It will be ok.. If Angel shows signs of pain she can go right back on the meds. Just think of how excited you will be if she doesn't have any signs of pain. You will then know she has made wonderful progress in recovering from surgery and if not, just go back on the meds and there will be another time. Either way, Angel will tell you..Keep in contract with her Vet and keep him in touch with how she reacts..
Hugs and prayers

Thank you Pauliana..just don't know what I'd do without the support here. Today is the day!!! We'll give it a go, and I'll let you know how it goes. It will be such a relief to get her off the Carprofen, she's not a big eater, and trying to get her to eat more or less on command is really hard. So she'll get it at 3PM, then her Tramadol again at 11PM, so we'll see how she is tomorrow morning...Hopefully she won't be in pain..

Debbie, we here at Dodgerslist appreciate your warm fuzzy to let us know we have helped you through Angel's recovery period. Pauliani is great isn't she! There are many others we want to reach but we just can't be everywhere on Facebook, Twitter, etc. to find those needing support. If you have the ability to help educate by distributing our literature www.dodgerslist.com/literature/litorder.htm or mentioning where people can find help during trying times with IVDD, please let them know about our Forum and how to find us. dodgerslist.boards.netThanks in advance for helping us! Got our fingers crossed for pain free on the stop of meds tomorrow!

Thank you Paula..I did order a Packet of Info on IVDD, and plan on passing it out..I have been trying to keep those here calm if I notice they don't get a response from one of you. I understand how busy you must be. I know how I felt in the beginning and it was such a comfort to have ANYONE respond, just to even let me know they understood my fears.

If anyone is available, I was wondering if there is anything I can put on Angel's back where she had her staples removed...I think they are itching and I'm afraid to do anything to it.

Will do some research to see if there is something soothing for her incision. Tyler used one of his raccoon toys that I had in his crate. It had soft legs that stuck out, to ease the itch once in a while. He would lay on his side with it's feet on his back and since he wasn't rubbing or being rambunctious, I let him. For some reason just the feet touching him there helped. He wasn't scratching with it or anything. I was so impressed that he was using it as a tool for an "important to him" purpose. The Vet might have some healing cream for Angel.. In the meantime I will see what I can find.. How is she doing on her taper so far?

Debbie,
How is her incision looking? Did the Vet feel it was healing as expected? If it looks irritated, I would get in touch with him and have it checked and see if he wants to prescribe a cream or ointment for her. Itching is a sign of healing though and if she is really bothered by it, I would try a warm or cool (depending on what she prefers) damp compress on it for a few minutes and see if that helps soothe it.
Try buying the smaller bottle of Rescue Remedy for Pets. Be sure to get the Pet version as the people version has alcohol in it.

The incision looks GREAT Pauliana, and the vet didn't say anything about it. She is doing AWESOME on the taper, although at 5AM I had a scare. I awoke to her wimpering, and since her crate is in bed with us, I got up, and took her out of the crate and first thing took her to potty. She did go, both pee and poo. So I put her back in the crate to see what response I would get since the only pain reaction I noticed was shivering, but it's chilly out. She didn't fuss, so we went back to sleep... I noticed the Rescue remedy comes in 10 and 20 mls, not sure if I was looking at pet or adult, but if it was pet, which do I get?
*Also..I'm wondering if Angel is getting enough exercise? I'm reading posts where people are walking their dogs for 5 mins 3 times a day, I'm just doing the physical therapy on Angel, the only walking she gets is when she goes potty...should I let her walk more?? The vet said May 1st, I could start short walks..she isn't finished with 100% crate rest till May 14th...I'm confused as to what to do..Don't want her to lose to much muscle tone, because of this surgery???
Also, need to know if the New Recovery Suite in the profile pic is too big for her right now, she had surgery on the 2nd of April???

As I recall, we held off on the post surgical walks for a few weeks. We did the passive range of motion/stretching exercises 3 times a day. Yes, she lost muscle mass and tone, but once she was walking again, it came back fairly quickly. once she was through the 6 weeks crate rest, the neuro vet said to reintroduce activity at about 25% per week.
Believe it or not, once you're through with the 6 weeks crate rest, it will be just a blip of time in your memory. While you're going through it, it seems like forever, doesn't it? It's time well spent.

Yes pollysmom, it's not even been 3 weeks, yet it seems like it's been 3 MONTHS. Thank you for your help, does this recovery suite look to big?

The space is a bit bigger than the only room enough to turn around, stand up and legs can be fully stretched out for a recovery suite. Since your vet is calling for strict rest except for the walking she does to get potty taken care of, maybe you should tighten up the ex-pen panels a bit or you can roll up blankets to pad out the extra space. I would also attach her bowls at head height. This tip and other very good ones are on our supply list: www.dodgerslist.com/literature.htm#recoverysuite

Ok Paula, After I got it set up, I thought it might be too big, I'll put this one out for her to potty then, and bring the other back in, it's smaller..

Hi Debbie, You can buy the small or large size of Rescue remedy for pets.. I started with the small size to see how it would work and bought the larger size later. I like to keep it around the house just in case. It works well on separation anxiety too. There is no difference in formulation. You add two drops in the food or you can add two drops into her mouth. Or as an alternative you can put 4 drops into her water instead. www.rescueremedypet.com/Hey, Angel only has 3 weeks to go on crate rest. You are half way there!

Your "crate" looks like what we bought Polly for the last two weeks of her confinement. It gave her a little more space, and little change of scene. We called it the Taj MaPolly.

You are doing so good with your little angel, she is adorable. When I took Daphne to the acupuncturist the first time she was apprehensive and so he sprayed something in the air, she sniffed it and soon was calm. I asked him what that was and he said rescue remedy! I got some for Daphne so I would have it when she came home. I think it even worked on me while we were there. Works for us, you and Angel will be in my thoughts and prayers. Wouldn't it be neat if we could all have a big reunion with all our recovered dogs! Would love to meet all the wonderful people that use and provide all the much needed information for us. Love and Hugs

Thank you...I was a basket case in the beginning, not sure if you read ALL my posts, but I thought I was going to lose my mind...I Thank God for this Forum, and the Members everyday. If it wasn't for everyone here, I don't know what I would of done. Angel (Angelina Desiree') and her older half sister Lacey (Lacey Antionette') lol. We thought our looooong dogs needed loooooog names, anyways, they are our life, and we do what we have to do to keep or make them healthy. They love us unconditionally, and ask for nothing in return.. And it would be AWESOME to meet everyone here..

It might be one that has been moved. Example: the dog got moved from conservative to surgery.

Daphne is only 1 week post surgery and she is feeling like she did 6 weeks post first surgery, so I understand what you mean. Daphne likes her carrier, so I think I have and advantage. She likes to look out the window and see is she can see a squirrel or anything. This kept her quiet and I would also give her one of her favorite bones to chew on or toy. I have her in a pack n play sometimes and I can put in on our front deck in good weather (suppose to be 75+ today)and let her enjoy the sun and smells. I, of course, make sure the sun isn't shining directly on her. I drape a sheet across the top. So glad she is recovering and you don't have much longer to go, we have 5 more weeks and I am sure the surgeon is going to be impressed as to how well she is doing this time. Good luck with your little "Angel" give her hugs and kisses from me and Daphne. Hang in there.

Thank you so much, I did get her settled, I moved her ex-pen over in front of the sliding glass door. I think it might have to stay there for the next 3 weeks, she does love looking out the door, and I haven't found a DOXIE yet that doesn't LOVE the sun. Angel never was a "bone chewer", and she doesn't play with toys anymore. I'm thinking she might be depressed, don't know if those Composure tabs or Rescue remedy would help. I haven't seem any info on depression here, maybe I'll snoop around.. :/

Hi, Debbie. We connected on the Facebook via Dodgerslist and my post about my Bailee and her surgery on April 7. I am so happy to hear your Angel is doing well. I have been following your posts for an idea on progress and what to expect. Thank you so much for posting... We are also in the Pittsburgh, PA area. If you feel you need a break, I would be open to meeting you for coffee and a chat. Let me know. Bailee had her staples removed on Saturday 4/20 and took her last pain meds yesterday evening. She still does not alot of back leg control but she is peeing potty and pooping on her own during sling walks. Because she is on minimal meds now she is whining, barking and digging when locked in crate or hanging out in the pack and play. Our doctor wants her resting as much as possible for the next 4 weeks and has prescribed the sedative Trazodone, 25 mg every 12 hours. So far so good... You might try this.

Hello, Thank you, I will consider it. I'm concerned about Bailee's whining, are you sure she's pain free? I still have Angel on Tramadol 2 times a day, although I am tapering her off her meds and she still gets the Rimadyl at 3PM. I'm just not 100% sure she is pain free, untill then, I'll keep her on the meds. Tomorrow, I'll stop the rimadyl and see how she does, but are you seeing any signs of pain in Bailee?? Hard stomach, making noise when picked up, etc? Thanks for the offer of taking a break..

Ladies, have you considered a stroller to help during their recovery. They are great to use in the house for moving around with you. I used one through a huge part of one of my dogs' recovery. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/strollers.htm
