I have been down this road before, but it doesn't make it any easier. I think Angel any be taking a step backwards. She is moving slowly and NOT wanting to do up the ramp at all. I crated her last night, there is no whimpering, trembling, or tight belly, but I made an appt just the same. If crate rest is needed, I've got a head start. Her surgeon said there may be times when she's in pain and it has been really chilly here, but I need the vet to check her back, as I do not know how to check it for pain. She has not lost any functions at this point. Will update after we see the vet...Please pray for my Baby Girl, she's been through so much...

Good job Deborah on crating last night. With this degenerative disease any of the discs in the neck or back are subject to prematurely aging. Reluctance to move by moving slowly and avoiding the ramp IS a sign of pain. IF this is another disc problem your eagle eye has caught it early to keep the mild symptoms mild and not progress to loosing neuro functions. It is always a good idea to review things. I know when my dog has a problem my mind can go to mush and not think of everything. This page is very useful to revisit on the meds used, etc. prior to the vet visit. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/healingpage.htmIf you believe she is in pain a pain med such as Tramadol if you have some left will help. Since it is very short acting it will be out of her system by the am so the vet will be able to examine her in her natural state to get the best diagnosis. Let us know what the vet says in the morning.

Deborah, my prayers are with Angel and with you. I hope the vet can see Angel soon and get her started on the necessary meds, if needed.
Blessings to you both.

Thank you Marjorie... Under Linda's advice...I have contacted the Vet that did Angel's surgery.. www.facebook.com/pvsec1 ...He can see her tomorrow morning..the problem is, we are down to 1 car and the Hubster is on DayShift this week...I set up the appt, and when he gets home, I'll see if he can take the day off...if not...I'll have to see our regular vet..:/ I would much rather see Dr. M though. Until till she is crated, no meds as she does not appear to be in any pain, and she has diarrhea today I gave her some pumpkin, hoping it kicks in soon...poor baby...looks at me as if to ask...Why are you punishing me??? She is NOT happy...but coping. I sincerely hope I am over re-acting. Keep the prayers coming..

Deborah,
How did I miss this? Your quick action with crating her was the right thing to do until you know for sure what is going on.. I hope it isn't her back and with the diarrhea perhaps she has a painful tummy and that's what is getting her down.. Hope your husband can take the day off so you can take her to the Surgeon as you are hoping..
Sending you and Angel lots of hugs and prayers and comforting thoughts.

The Hubster did take the day off, and we just got back...I just love Dr. M, he is VERY thorough. Thanks for the hugs and prayers Paula & StevieLuv, much appreciated. The neuro exam went GREAT..but when he checked her spine, he got a little reaction around the lower spine. We gave me a gabapentin to give if I thought she needed it for pain, and wants her "settled" until Thanksgiving. He also gave me a script for her diarrhea (Metronidazole)..I remembered after I wrote, that she had her heart worm med the day before the diarrhea started, and it was a different brand than what she's used to due to a re-call. So we aren't sure if that's the cause or not. none the less, when we got home today, she was in the yard looking for grass to eat, (a sure sign for her, that she has an upset tummy), so I'm not sure what is going on. I will continue the crate rest and if the upset tummy continues, I guess I'll schedule an appt for our regular vet. In the mean time, she is still showing no signs of pain, but I'm wondering if I should give her something later since the Dr. was pressing on her spine??? Any advice, or input on this?

Please do be conscientious about crate rest. If the vet found tenderness in lower back, this maybe a very mild symptom of a disc problem. Giving a pain med (Gabapentin) will take the discomfort away and Angel will feel like moving around too much. 4 weeks of crate rest would not be enough time to let the disc heal IF this is an other disc starting to degenerate/bulge.

Metronidazole is used for diarrhea that can be caused by a bacterial overgrowth or imbalance in the intestinal tract, usually with fast results. Her diarrhea could have been triggered by a combo of a sore back and the HW meds, throwing her system out of balance. Hoping she feels better fast.

Thank you StevieLuv...The diarrhea had cleared up, BUT...she was up at 2:30, 3:30, then again at 7am with diarrhea...not sure if it is due to the grass she was eating yesterday or not...when she has an upset tummy, she will eat grass to throw up...well, she ate the grass but didn't throw up...ugh. She pooped again at 10am, semi-soft...think I'll hold off giving her anything to see what happens. Other than that..nothing has changed... NO signs of pain, NOT happy with crate rest, but coping.. :/ I'm wondering if anyone is using turmeric for inflammation? I do give Angel 1/2 a sardine every day, but every once in a while she will refuse for a week or two. Are there any other Natural Anti-Inflammatories that other's here are using? I'm still researching the tumeric… www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/turmeric-dogs/1PM update: Ok, now I'm really not sure what to do...she is back to eating MORE grass...I know for sure she has an upset tummy...as much as I don't want to start this new med...I think I may have to...something is going on inside my Baby Girl..Any ideas...deeply appreciated.. :/

Prayers for speedy recovery! Rufus has been getting a pinch of ground turmeric I bought at Earth Fare with each dinner since Jan of this year, along with a pinch of Virgin Coconut Oil. Also, I try to watch flour, grains, white potatoes, etc., as they can cause inflammation. He just had a disc episode this week. : (

Are you giving her Pepcid AC? Is she eating her meals OK. Drinking a normal amount of water?

Thank you Charli, good to know, and so sorry to hear about Rufus...Paula...No, No Pepcid as I'm giving her the Metronidazole as of 1:15 yesterday...she is doing soooo much better today. And Maureen,(I hope I got the name right) you are so right about this being FAST acting. And Yes Paula she is eating and drinking as well as before.. Still looking for info on Natural Anti-inflammatories.. My Baby Girl is settled and contant..she will lay in her crate with the door open and fall asleep with her head resting on my hand..she is so spoiled. I NEVER leave the door open unless I am RIGHT there. She is my Snuggle Bug, and we both miss our Snuggle time, if this is what it takes to make her 8 weeks easier for her and I, then so be it. She won't come out of the crate UNLESS she has to potty. (of course, if a dog walked down the street, she would BOLT out...), LOL.. NEVER leave your Weiner unsupervised.. Question for anyone having ANY advice??? Angel has the CRUSTIES in the corners on her eyes, one is worse than the other...any advice on how to prevent or better yet eliminate them???

Hi Debbie Wonderful news that our Angel is doing better today. I don't have any information on natural anti-inflammatories for you.
About the crust, does she have allergies? Does she always have this or something that has just developed?

Hi Linda...To my knowledge, she does not have allergies. I had mentioned this to the Vet a while ago, and her response to me was, "It probably bothers you more than it does her." So, who knows. Angel continues to do well, I'm continuing the med, Metronidazole, as the bottle say "continue till GONE". She is somewhat content in her crate, although at times gets very fussy, and as a Pet Parent, I'm at a loss as to what to do. I can usually figure out what she needs by her different tones of her whines, but sometimes she throws me off...then looks at me like I'm the crazy one for not knowing what she wants...LOL. She still appears to be pain free so this is gonna be a LONG 8 weeks..ugh

YAY!!! We graduated crate rest on the 27th, but as you ALL know...I'm a nervous wreck. I'm ALWAYS on guard, and continually looking for ways to improve my home for the FurKids. There is NO more I can do here.. The ONLY issue I have with them NOW, is jumping from the couch to the back of the couch to look out the window...How do you stop that??? I lift them up there when I know they are on their way up there, but I cannot ALWAYS catch them. Out side of remove the furniture, I don't know what else to do, and then of course they jump back down from the back of the couch to the couch...ugh. If anyone has a solution, PLEASE let me know, we have pillows and ramps EVERYWHERE.

Happy Crate rest graduation, dear Angel and Deborah!
Furniture blockers seems the way to go and also since they can't lounge on furniture, perhaps some comfy pet beds scattered around the house or their favorite hangout rooms. As Paula suggested perhaps another way too look out the windows with a ramp as the only way up or down and a platform or box..
WE IVDD Mom's always worry but here's to a happy life outside the crate.. Just listen to your Mom, Angel, she knows how to take good care of you!
