Hi all! I fostered and then ultimately adopted a dog who most likely had an IVDD episode before he came into rescue. Ernie is a wobbly walker but gets around great and is fast as the wind when he sees a squirrel. He's not in any pain and is one happy guy.
The only residual problem he has is that he can't control his bowels. When it's time to go, he goes wherever he is. I'm able to manage this at home. I know about how long between BMs and can give him lots of time to run around in the backyard to go. Running and activity seems to stimulate him. Now that the weather is getting cold (he hates the cold!) he spends less time outside so has more "accidents" in the house. I'm used to it and it's easily cleaned up. My problem is traveling to my mom's for Thanksgiving. I'm wondering if there is anything I can use on him that will "catch" the poop. Some type of diaper or device specifically for that purpose. I know I'm probably grasping at straws but thought it was worth a try.
I know everyone overlooked him when he was available for adoption because of the poop problem, but he's one of the most active, entertaining, wonderful personality dogs I've ever had. I love him to pieces!
Thanks for reading and any ideas.

What a handsome boy and thank you for giving him a chance!! I would not recommend a diaper as most dogs would abhor having feces next to their body…you know what a sense of smell our Doxies have! Normally expressing for poop would be for a dog who is paralyzed to help activate poop release. You may want to give it a try to see if Ernie will accept that kind of stimulation to activate his reflexes. If you know the time table to when he normally would poop on his own you, can try to express about 30-60 minutes prior to avoid accidents. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/Expressing.htm#poop

Thank you. I'll look at the video and see if it's something he'll let me do. Really I would only need to do it when I'm visiting my mom's house. He has truly become very special to me. Love him to pieces and I know that people who overlooked him when he was available for adoption missed out on a super boy.

I just had to give you an update. I went to visit family over Thanksgiving and took Ernie with me but didn't want him pooping in the house. He doesn't have full bowel control. He did well pooping outside until one very cold day. He just wouldn't stay outside long enough to go and I knew he was due. I went into the bathroom with him and expressed him like the video showed. It worked! I'm happy that I now know what to do when I need to get him to go. Thank you so much Paula for sharing that.

Denise, so very pleased you've added another skill to make living with Ernie more wonderful than it already is!
