Rocco's Sophie 7/17 Conservative Well, unfortunately Sophie's having another IVDD episode. I had some family over for the week and mind you I jump-proofed my house since the last time. Somebody moved one of Sophie's firescreens that I keep by my couch so she can't jump off and didn't put it back.....of course she jumped off. Was having trouble walking so I called up the vet and they told me to give her the Tramadol and Methocarbamol I had left over from last time. She's had stomach issues with Meloxicam in the past so they prescribed Carprofen; it's in pill form and so far is easy on her stomach unlike the liquid Meloxicam. So, as of today I'm starting another round of 8 weeks crate rest. I just wanted to post here because last time I would've been lost without your help. I will update her meds below. Carprofen 25 mg - 1/4 tablet every 12 hours (6.25mg) Methocarbamol 500 mg - 1/4 tablet every 12 hours (125 mg) Tramadol 50 mg - 1/2 tablet every 8 hours (25 mg) [Moderator's note: please do not modify 8.2 lbs Carprofen as of 7/17: 6.25mgs 2x/day for how 7 days BEFORE test-for-pain stop Methocarbamol 125mgs 2x/day Tramadol 25mgs 3x/day Pepcid AC 5mgs 2x/day] Question: since the Carprofen is an anti-inflammatory, should I give her the Pepcid before hand? I gave it with food earlier today but not the Pepcid. I would like to protect her stomach as much as possible, so would it be okay to give her Pepcid 30 min beforehand? BTW, thanks to anyone reading and for future responses. It's indescribable how much we love our pets and this forum really helps us and our pets when it's needed most. Thanks so much everyone

Hi Rocco. So sorry Sophie is having another episode. I looked at the main website, www.dodgerslist.com, for information on carprofen. It's also called Rimadyl and you can look it up using the search engine there. It did say that nsaids as well as antiinflammatories can cause stomach irritation, so yes I'd give pepcid 30 minutes before the carprofen 2x daily. Each dose is good for 12 hours. Just be aware that if for any reason Sophie needed to switch to an antiinflammatory, like a steroid, she would need double stomach protection. Both provide and a prescription medication called sulcrafate. Best wishes to you both. Aarg!! I hate autocorrect. OK, pepcid and sulcrafate. LOL.😀

Rocco, so sorry to hear it is another disc problem. Good thing you know the routine and crated and got vet help.
Let us know you are giving Pepcid AC 5mgs 2x/day.
If any hint of pain should show do know that the pain meds have a short half life. If all of them have not been prescribed for evert 8 hours (3x/day) the level does not stay high enough in the body to give full round the clock comfort. So if you see pain, do alert the vet and advocate for Tramadol to be 3x/day.
What is Sophies neuro status. Is she wobbly? do her paws knunckle under? Do her nails scuff the floor?
Did Carprofen start as of 7/17? for how many days is the prescription for?

Hello Paula,
Yes I'm giving the Pepcid twice a day now, at 5 mg each dose.
Right now I am giving her the Tramadol 3x a day, every 8 hours.
The prescription of Carprofen will last 7 days and the vet then wants to see where her pain level is at. And yes it started 7/17.
Luckily her neuro status is good, again. She isn't wobbly or dragging her paws or any of that. Just very deliberate with her steps; moving slower than normal.

Thankfully she is not having any neuro problems this time. So the current meds are:
[Carprofen as of 7/17: 6.25mgs 2x/day for 7 days BEFORE test-for-pain stop Tramadol 25mgs 3x/day Methocarbamol 125mgs 2x/day ? still giving Pepcid AC 5mgs 2x/day]

Meds seems to be working flawlessly. Soph hasn't been in pain at all. Already wagging her tail like crazy and walking better with her minimal potty steps. Will update in few days when the Carprofen runs out

Some good news: the test for pain went well. Sophie showed no signs of pain. Right now she's curled up in a little ball.
Today is exactly 1 week since I started crate rest. She was kinda of anxious the first couple weeks of crate rest last time, but this time it's almost like she knows she's hurt and needs to heal up. So, 7 more weeks to go!

Rocco, so glad the test for pain stop of Carprofen has shown all painful swelling in the spinal cord is gone!!! Now the remaining 7n weeks are to allow the disc to form some good strong scar tissue.
It sure makes it easier for you that Sophie is OK with her recoery suite, too. Thanks for the update.

Sophie's doing well. Just resting and counting the days down. Just a little picture update; today's the day we celebrate as her birthday since it's the day we adopted her. Here's some pictures of her licking on her 3 lamb lung treats and then her being silly playing peek-a-boo lol I wish they didn't rotate like that after I post them. Oh well

Halfway point yay! Luckily things are going smoothly. Last picture is a few years back when we were living in Chicago - she loved the snow but couldn't stand the cold weather lol

So glad to hear she is doing well - she is so cute! 1/2 way point is definitely cause for celebration! You may want to start thinking about how you will help her to ease back into life after crate rest. Here are some suggestions to get you started. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/AfterCrateRest.htm

Wonderful news on completing all 8 weeks of rest. That gradual introduction back to physical activity over the next 3 weeks will ensure you are not confused by overdoing things and sore muscle with a new disc episode. Good job! We invite you to hop on to our educational bandwagon team. Education about disc disease is our number one mission! We wish we did not have to hear of another dog that was put to sleep because of disc disease nor one denied the correct principles of crate rest to help them heal. We would like all of our members to pay forward for the help they have received with their dog by helping us educate!
We depend on you. Here are two ways to help... -- "Share" our FB posts www.facebook.com/Dodgerslist-- Hand carry our literature to your vets. When in conversation at the grocery store line or wherever you may meet breeds most prone to IVDD (Dachshunds, Beagles, Poodles, Spaniels, Shih Tzus, Pekingese, and Chihuahuas) give out our little cards. Ask Linda to send you a free packet: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/litorder.htm-- If Sophie is not yet in the Photo Gallery, please add her picture to help inspire owners just getting an overwhelming IVDD diagnosis. Hi Rocco. Congrats on the graduation. I'm also a third timer so know the drill and also graduated yesterday. My question is unrelated yet (almost) equally important, LOL. On ur August 14th post Sophie is wearing a very functional looking winter coat which actually goes up to her face and looks comfy. Always wanting to find what I don't have. What's the brand on that, perhaps website if you know?? Thabks and best of luck. Hopefully it will be our last bout. Robert

Hi Robert,
The brand is called PMP - it stands for Protect Me for Pets. Got it many years ago at Petco. Not sure if they still carry them.
Yes, I wish nothing but the best for both our dogs - NO more IVDD problems hopefully! Have a great day
