Sheldon is a 4.5 year old standard dachshund. I am currently approximately 1,000 miles away for a six week training program, which is making this so unbelievably hard I feel like I am losing my mind. Saturday 5/14, my mother noticed Sheldon did not want to walk and was in pain. The last time she remembered him walking was around 3am that morning in their bedroom. By 12:30 that afternoon, he was at a specialist surgeon and had lost the ability to walk and had no deep pain sensation. They performed surgery around 4:00pm and he had three slipped discs (I am not sure which ones as I am not there) and a lot of blood and swelling. He still has no deep pain sensation today. I am terrified of getting that call about the big M. It seems that dogs that go into surgery with no DPS tend to develop it at a higher rate. It is killing me to not be there when it could be his last few days of something bad happens. I'm trying to be positive, but I need support and information. Thank you for any help.

Sara, welcome to Dodgerslist. I can well imagine the worry when you are so far away from Sheldon. When surgery is performed within 24- 48 hours of loosing deep pain sensation there is good chance of nerve healing to happen. Surgery itself will cause swelling and it will not likely be until 2 weeks post op when all that swelling is resolved, you can best assess the healing direction Sheldon is going in. It is hard to not worry being long distance but if you can send your most positive of thoughts to Sheldon! Now is the time to jot things down before the discharge day arrives. Here's a starter list of questions to which you can add some of your concerns to ask your surgeon: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/dischargequestions.htmThis page is good reading by Dr. Isaacs, ACVIM (neurology) as he explains many post-op questions for our IVDD community: meds, crate rest, PT and discharge day. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/surgery.htm#medsWould your mom be able to join us here to give the details about the surgery? We have lots to share in caring for an IVDD dog. I hope as quickly as time permits, you and your mom will begin to devour each of the articles in our Disc Disease 101 area. Sheldon is going to be dependent on you guys. Depending on a good recovery suite for one thing! Check out the possiblities and the supplies to make this time go smoother: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/CrateRRP.htmWhen possible can you fill us in so we know best how to help: -- Once home expect all pain to fully be in control with meds. Let the vet know if this is not the case if you see: shivering, trembling, yelping when picked up or moved, reluctant/slow to move head or body, tight hard tummy.-- What are the exact names of meds he is sent home with, their doses in mgs and frequencies?

They said he had material removed from the 11th, 12th, and 13th discs. He has good vitals yesterday and today and so far no signs of M. He said it will be 2-3 days until he is out of the woods for that to develop though.

Hi Sara,
We will keep Sheldon in my prayers that M does not develop. Have they said how long he is to be at the hospital? Your Mom is welcome to join us, so we can help support both of you..
Thanks for keeping us posted. I fully understand how worried you must be. Thankfully Sheldon is in good hands! How long until your training program is over?
Sending comforting thoughts to you over the miles..
