Posted a reply the other day and it did not post.
Baxter Boo has been on Rimadyl since fall 2014. He is still taking the Rimaydl. We started the tampering of the tramadol, he went down to 1/2 of a 50 mg tablet once a day and the day he was to go off the tramadol he yelped, just once when you touched the place on his upper back (he had been touched there before during the tramadol tamper and did not yelp). And he hasn't yelp since.
When this first started it was tender to just touch that location. I do not think it is still tender to touch but he is still experiencing discomfort/pain in that area. It was more a startled fear yelp than a pain yelp.
Called the vet (he is wonderful gave me his cell number when this started) and he said to not to tamper him totally of the tramadol, keep him at 1/2 a tablet a day and call on Monday to discuss how he did the remainder of Saturday and Sunday (the one yelp occurred Saturday afternoon)
[weight? Rimadyl long term since 2014 disc episode Tramadol 25mgs 1x/day]

Shari, let us know what the vet says with today's appointment.
How much does Baxter weigh?

Baxter Boo weighs 16 pounds.
He is doing great, since that one yelp on the 30th of July, no pain and he is acting 100% normal. He is now totally off the tramadol and has been for over a week. He is still not doing water therapy but is doing laser treatments.
Although it appears to not have been a disc episode but a strain of some sort, I am still playing it on the conservative side. Since we cannot say for certain it was not a disc episode going to keep him on the crate rest for a full 8 weeks.
Another reason for keeping him on the crate rest for a full 8 weeks, I will be out of town part of next week and the entire last week in August, my husband will still be at home with Baxter Boo. Although my husband knows the signs and stuff with disc episodes, I am more in tune with Baxter Boo, he is my little boy and I notice subtle changes in his behavior that my husband may miss. Since I will not be here to notice any subtle changes, keeping him on crate rest would be better. Also his 8 weeks will be up right about the time I return from my trip.

Shari, I think you've made a wise decision continuing the crate rest for a full 8 weeks since Baxter Boo did show signs of back pain and a disc episode was not ruled out. Glad to hear he's doing well.

We still do not know if it was just a pulled muscle or another disc episode but it has been just over 8 weeks of full crate rest. We have been gradually reintroducing him to his daily activities and he is doing great.

Baxter Boo has been doing well but during the last week something new is going on. We have been expressing Baxter Boo's bladder since his last episode in 2014. A few days ago he developed bad diarrhea and we took him to the vet and he was prescribed antibiotics. Two days ago when ever we went to express him, not much urine came out and his bed was wet. Yesterday took him to an emergency vet to make sure is bladder is truly empty and they tried to express him and examined his bladder and he is empty. So whatever is causing this incontinence is emptying is bladder.
Going to call his regular vet today about this but wondering if anyone has any ideas of what may be going on

Shari, hope your vet will have an idea. Which antibiotics were prescribed on what date?

Sometimes you have to be a detective. Any new foods or treats lately?
My dogs started having repeat episodes of diarrhea and I finally tracked it down to a big bag of kibble.
Ask your vet about fasting Baxter for 24 hours to calm his gi tract down and then giving chicken and rice.
Bland food. And ask vet about metronidazole. It helped my dogs diarrhea.
Antibiotics kill good bacteria and bad. Baxter needs probiotics to restore the good bacteria.
I give my dogs plain organic yogurt with active cultures.
Is Baxter drinking plenty of water? If not you might get some plain Pedialyte and a syringe if he'll tolerate that. However, I'm not a vet. Just found this helpful for my dogs.

The antibiotic is Metronidazole, 1/2 table twice a day (250 mg in a tablet) prescribed on Wednesday, he is to take them for 7 days.
The vet said since Baxter Boo does have some use of his back legs and feeling, the diarrhea is probably causing his muscles to contract which is causing him to pee on his own.
He is also on a bland diet right now. There has been no other changes in his food or diet.

Update on Baxter Boo. He is doing great. We had a devil of a time getting him firmed up. To make a long story short, basically because of his age (he will be 16 in August) his digestive system is much more sensitive and got process most commercial brand dog foods. the contractions in his stomach because of the digestive upset was causing him to urinate without control.
So he is now on a homemade chicken rice diet with a vitamin supplement and all is back to normal with Baxter Boo.

Shari, glad to hear it turns out he was not loosing bladder control and now things are back to normal. You may wish to learn more about home cooking if he will never be able to go back to commercial foods, which are a balanced diet. You can compare if there are areas you'd want to enhance in light of Baxter's digestive sensitivities. Oh Shari, my heart is heavy hearing this news. Baxter was a fighter and with your devotion and care sure did live out many wonderful years with you since his first disc episode back in 2003. It’s impossible to forget your Baxter ever— he has given you so much to remember. LIfe certainly is sweeter when we can travel it with our beloved furry friends.
My sincere condolences and warmest of ((hugs)) to you and your family.
