[Original subject line: Dental Surgery] Hi! I’m very concerned about having my IVDD 10 year old dachshund in for teeth cleaning and extraction. He needs it, but it has been one of those things I’ve been avoiding due to fear of the veterinary personnel mishandling him (while he’s out or otherwise). Obviously he’s not in the midst of an episode or recovery at the moment, I just fear this could bring one on (he’s had about 4 episodes since he was 4 years old). Any advice on what to say to the vet when/if we bring him in?

IVDD dogs have a special risk whenever they are under anesthesia. You will want to be assured your vet and all vet techs in attendance understand the risk. A dog's main defense against further disc damage is dependent upon control over the core trunk muscles – this defense is eliminated with anesthesia.
