☀︎1-- Maltipoo, Yuri (fur baby), and Destiny (fur baby’s mom!) ☀︎2-- ~10lbs ☀︎3-- neurologist! ☀︎4-- surgery was 02/27/2024 and neurologist cleared for walks on 03/13/2024 and to be moved to larger enclosure when can be supervised and crate when not supervised.
☀︎5-- What did your surgeon direct for PT (always a supervised, eye-ball to eyeball controlled therapy)? passive ROM, supervised until after 6 weeks. ☀︎6-- How many weeks for crate rest including his directives for supervised and controlled PT? two weeks! Yuri cleared for PT on 03/13/2024
☀︎7--no signs of pain or any of the other symptoms described here. she seems super happy though still very wobbly and uncoordinated. ☀︎9-- wobbly walk, definitely moving her legs, wagging her tail since 24 hours after surgery— very happy with her squeaky toys, lots of tail wagging. ☀︎10-- no wet bedding! ☀︎11-- Eating and drinking OK? Poops OK - normal color no dark or bright red blood? eating and drinking is great! bowel movements have also been normal and consistent! no straining.
Tomorrow will be four weeks and i’ve never been through this before so i’m unsure if Yuri’s wobbly walk is still normal. Her back is slightly arched but otherwise no signs of pain and is absolutely happy.

Welcome to Dodgerslist, Destiny. We are glad you’ve joined us all. We’ve got valuable information we’ve learned from the vets Dodgerslist consults with and our own experiences with IVDD since 2002 to share with you! Learn more about us and how we team up with veterinarians: dodgerslist.com/about-team-dodgerslist/Yuri seems to be doing well only a month after surgery. Nerves can take a long time to heal, so wobbly walking is not surprising at this point. Prior to the surgery, was she able to walk?
What helped my dog, Frankie, the most after his surgery was aqua therapy, where he walked on an underwater treadmill. Frankie could not walk before the surgery and at the one-month post surgical follow-up. I started him on this aqua therapy. It took a few months, but Frankie regained his ability to walk.
Yuri is already walking, but the underwater treadmill therapy might still be beneficial. It helps with coordination and strength, both of which can be affected during an IVDD episode. This therapy can help elicit better spinal cord communication to the brain.
We have a video here that shows how it works:
You can also do water therapy at home in the bathtub or a small kiddie pool. Tips for that can also be found at the above link.
If you are interested in this type of therapy, ask your surgeon about it. Yuri may be able to start this now.
