I'm looking for tips and suggestions for how to manage a multiple dog household once Tommy is out of crate rest. Because of my hobby of dog agility, my dogs tend to be on the crazy side of energtic. They have that wild eyed high drive that would send a lot of dogs to the humane society because people can't redirect it toward something productive. My avatar picture really illustrates their personalities.
Tommy is 8 years old but acts about 2. As I said in the other thread (conservative 8/24), he needs a job and I have no problem finding something else for him to do.
Callie is a 10 month old sheltie who outweighs Tommy by about 5 pounds and an inch or so in height. We're working on self control but sometimes that puppy exhuberance takes over. And even normal dog play can be pretty rough.
Do I forever gate them to different areas of the house? My downstairs is a 4-room square (kitchen/foyer/dining room/kitchen) and I can gate it in half (you can see the gate in my picture - we used it for housebreaking), but it would be at the exclusion of isolating one dog to an area where there are not people. If people do this, do you trade on and off by evening, hourly, or some other way?

That is a tough one... we are lucky enough to have lower energy multiple dogs at our house, but I still have supervised play - they are never left alone together. Stevie goes into the ex-pen if I have to leave the house. But they are not high energy working dogs, nor are they puppies. I will do some research and see what ideas some friends that do agility/herding/penning etc and have multiple working dogs can come up with. I'll keep you posted.
