[Original subject line:IVDD Stage 5 with beginning signs of Myelomalacia ] Hi, my name is Joy and Ruby is my dachshund. Ruby weighs 11 lbs and just turned 3 yrs. old on July 2, 2022. [MED LIST/HISTORY- Moderator's Note. Please do not edit 11 lbs 3 y.o. currently post op in hospital on oral pain meds]Ruby had emergency surgery Sunday night, Aug 28th. She was diagnosed with IVDD Stage 5 just prior. Surgery was performed in Miami by a veterinarian neurologist. She has remained in the pet hospital since surgery. The doctor called this morning to tell me they detected myelomalacia descending and would update again this evening. My husband and I drove to Miami to take Ruby's "baby" to her in hopes of giving her some comfort and to possibly get a few moments with her. We were not allowed to see her but the nurse did offer to use my phone to take a short video for us. Ruby looked so alert in the video and once she made sure that was her baby, she looked around as if looking for us, knowing we must be close by! I'm hoping and praying the myelomalacia stops and certainly praying that it does not ascend. We rescued Ruby when she was 1 1/2 yrs old and she has been the greatest gift. I have profound hearing loss and with no training, she stepped right up to alerting me in numerous ways. Of course the doorbell ringing is her favorite alert! She also alerts when my phone rings, the alarm system is activated or any other noise that I would not hear or know about otherwise. I hope I have the chance to bring her home and take care of her just as she has taken care of me! I'm really not sure what I'm looking for in this post other than ascending myelomalacia won't happen. I know we can only wait, pray and see.As Ruby is still in the hospital, I do not know what medications are being administered. I do know her IV was removed, pain meds are being administered orally and she is eating well. Thank you for allowing me to put my story out there.

I am very sorry to hear that Ruby is showing signs of myelomalacia. Ascending myelomalacia is always fatal. There is no cure and no real treatment. Descending myelomalacia is not fatal but will result in paralysis from that area on down. Paralyzed dogs can live long and happy lives.
Ascending myelomalacia is very painful. Painful beyond reach of the strongest medication. As it travels upward the dog will have a lot of difficulty breathing. Please know that there is nothing you or the vet did that caused this. If this becomes ascending myelomalacia you would want to help sweet Ruby cross the rainbow bridge to spare a very painful death.
Please let us know when you are updated by the vet. We, too, are praying, that it will not travel upward.
