Danielle, so close to final stop of pain meds to get proof all swelling is gone. Fingers crossed for no pain to show 6/30.
Keep up the good work of limited movement for the disc to heal and form good strong scar tissue by graduation day July 25!

Good Morning. My apologies for the delayed response. We have had some unexpected events in the family and I have been traveling. Hayu stayed home with Dad rather than put him in a car for 18 hours.
[MED LIST/HISTORY- Moderator's Note. Please do not edit 23.2 lbs 8 y.o. 5/9 STRICT crate rest started Prednisone as of 5/10: 10mg 2x/day for 3 days, taper 5/13 to test for: _pain/ _neuro FINAL taper dose 6/24 traMADol 50mgs 2x/day 6/29 backs off to 1x/day, SToPPS 6/30 methocarbamol 2x/day STOPPED 7/10; resumed 7/12 Pepcid AC 10mgs 2x/day] So he was still having pain when picked up after I weaned him off the methocarbamol and was on 1 dose of tramadol (Thurs June 30). I took it upon myself to try the methocarbamol by itself and it worked well. Almost too well because even while in his crate he was trying to bounce around and when in his stroller he was standing on his back legs to watch what was going on.
Surprisingly at potty time, he has been listening and not trying to run off. When I tell him to wait he sits and waits. I gave him two (500 mg) methocarbamol a day from June30-July 5. Then we dropped to 1x a day until Saturday July 9. and then we stopped. Monday (July 11) he went to the vet and they examined him and there was zero pain with anything. Doctor told me if he exhibits any pain I can give him methocarbamol and/or tramadol (meaning discomfort, not a full episode) If it is worse than that, he wants him to come in again. Yesterday (July 12) my husband said when he got up (3 am), Hayu was hopping around in the crate and very excited to see him. He is in the smallest crate I can put him in. He let him go potty and put him back in. When I got up at 6 am I took him out and he whimpered when I picked him up. He went potty and into his stroller he went. He is back on the methocarbamol twice a day. When I pick him up I try to scoop him so my left hand is completely under his tushy and my right hand is below his neck at the top of his chest. Mid chest is where he reacts if we pick him up. He is sleeping right now and I am going to monitor for today. If there is no improvement, I will call the vet tomorrow morning.
Since he gets the methocarbamol right before bed, it is in the am that there is a reaction more often than not. He is on famotidine (20) daily since his stomach issue in June.

Danielle, methocarbamol lasts for only about 8 hrs. That explains why it wears off before next dose in 12 hrs (2x/day dosing).
Hope the whimper was only due to sore muscle of too much excitement movement and not due to disc having received too much pressure with excitement movement.
Please keep us posted...fingers crossed.

Something told me to call the vet. He wants him on ▲prednisone 2x a day for 2 days and give him an update. I just gave him 10mg now. The two a day will start tomorrow. Vet said that was ok. So I will call him Friday and give an update since they are closed for the weekend. After 2 days (Thurs 7/13 and Friday 7/14) he drops to 1x day for 2 days (Sat 7/16 and Sun 7/17) then 1 every other day (Tues 7/19 and Thurs 7/21) He wants him on ✙Tramadol and ✙methocarbamol 2x a day until at least Friday (7/14) when I call him.

I hope the change in meds will keep Hayu pain free.
Did the vet say the pain was likely disc related?

He thinks a flare-up. I think from his antics in the crate and the stroller it is sore/pulled muscle. Since I am not a doctor, I am following his instructions. This dog is going to give me a nervous breakdown if he doesn’t stop. He is chilling out right now thankfully.

Dannielle, with these mild symptoms of pain only, it is a challenge to diagnose. Your vet is not taking any chances this could well have been too much pressure for the disc with his use of pred and pain meds.
Hope by Sunday 7/17 when the pred taper starts and no pain meds are on board, you will not find any pain surfacing...pain surfacing would in my mind, tell you it is disc related not muscle related.
Do you have a plan B for meds worked out ahead of time with your vet, if pain would surface on Sunday? ER is expensive, a plan B's is not.

Good Morning. Plan B is I have a bottle of each medicine (100 in each) I am ready if something happens over the weekend. I always make sure I have it on hand just in case. I am home and he will be with me most of the weekend since my husband is working.
On a positive note, he is peeing more often due to the steroids, so I have to pick him up. He has not whined, cried or flinched any time I have picked him up. I am hopeful this means it is a pulled muscle, but also realize the meds could be masking pain. I will keep you posted on how he does and what the doc says tomorrow when I contact him. Thank you.

Good Morning. At about 1 or 2 yesterday afternoon [7/14] he whimpered when I picked him up and I gave him a dose of the methocarbamol. It worked.
I followed up with the vet [7/15] this morning and told him the schedule of steroid two times a day and the metho and tramadol 2x a day seems to be working. I gave him a third dose of metho in the afternoon (yesterday 7/14) and he was ok with that. He was animated with my husband this morning at 3 but not as out of control as he has been (meaning he was not trying to leap around the crate.) When I got up at 6 I carried him to potty and carried him back to his crate with no reaction from him. This was prior to any meds. I had to run out to an early appt and came back and did the same thing carried him to potty and back. No reaction again. He wanted in his stroller so I put him in again with no reaction. Today and tomorrow [7/15 & 16]1 dose of steroids. [MED LIST/HISTORY- Moderator's Note. Pepcid AC 10mgs 2x/day]
I just [7/15]gave him the all 3 meds [2 pain meds during pred taper] along with his other allergy and tummy meds. He is sleeping. I asked if there is an issue over the weekend. He said any issues to go back to 2 doses of each medication per day and I can tinker with the methocarbamol and tramadol if I need to. Follow up Monday with him if there is an issue. If he continues to improve to continue the taper and watch him and follow up with him at the end of next week (Friday 7/22/2022)

I hope the pred taper will go smoothly and no pain will emerge.
Usually during a pred taper the pain meds are stopped or cut back. This allows us to see right away if there is still pain. This would indicate that swelling in the spinal cord is still present. If this is the case, more time on the anti-inflammatory is needed. With pain meds masking pain on board it will take longer to get the full picture of what is going on with swelling.

Good Morning. I cut back [mgs & frequency?] the ▼tramadol and ▼Methocarbamol after Friday. He received 1 dose of pred Friday and Saturday. None yesterday[?] and 1 today.

I am picking him up several times for potty and no reaction. He walks to his water bowl (3-4 ft) to drink and I pick him up again. He is wanting to run but I am not allowing anything. No reactions yesterday at all. He slept through the night and was excited to see my husband when he got up but was not a crazy boy. At 6 he was animated again but listened when I told him to wait. Fingers crossed these are all good signs.

Hayu's behavior upon the decline in methocarbamol and traMADol indicates a good direction of believing all swelling may be gone. As always, accurate data from you helps us to understand things best.
What is the current dose of traMADol and methocarbamol: -- ?mgs dose -- how many times a day?
Pain meds do not require an every other day dose. It is only prednisone that MUST end with an every other day dose. If you could omit a day of pain meds, then very likely he does not need any pain meds.
Avoid jumping the gun on relaxation of STRICT rest for his disc. The target date of graduation is Monday July 25
His water bowl needs to be inside of the recovery suite. There should be no walking 3-4 feet to drink. Every time he walks his back moves. Every time the vertebrae move they press on all discs including the one trying to form secure scar tissue. Think "very minimal footsteps only"
At graduation day, then is the time to begin a very, slow and gradual introduction back to physical activity. I'm so excited to have Hayu have a good graduation day.

No tramadol since Friday night. I gave him 1 500mg methocarbamol this morning but am going to hold off until the pred taper is done unless he has a reaction.

Hayu seems to be doing well on the taper so far. Your plan to stop the methocarbamol now and observe Hayu's reaction is a good one. That way it will be easy to tell if all the swelling is gone.
We wanted to check on the methocarbamol because it is a higher dose than we usually see. Going back to your earlier posts, 500mg 2x a day is what he was also taking in May, so this is nothing unusual for him.

Hello. He has been on the 500mg (on and off, not consistently) since his very first episode in February. When it was really bad, he was taking it 3 times a day back then. He had no meds at all today and I purposely picked him up a few times. Absolutely no reaction. Tomorrow is his last dose of prednisone in the am. I will follow up with the vet on Friday morning. I realize I have a tendency to think full sentences in my head and half sentences to you. If you knew me you would know what I was saying in my half sentence, but you don’t. Feel free to ask questions if I am not making sense. Thank you.

Good Morning. He has had zero medication since [9/20] Wednesday and is showing no signs of pain or discomfort. I am allowing him to walk around a little bit but he is watched like a hawk. Fingers crossed we are over the hump and will continue in the right direction. The vet is happy with his progress. I need to contact him if anything changes.

THANK YOU!!!!!
Good Morning. We are 5 weeks out from graduation. Hayu is doing very well. I still have to watch him like a hawk but am working with him on wait and stay so he isn’t running around or trying to jump. Slowly he is starting to listen. No pain or discomfort when picked up or when we are giving belly rubs. Thank you and I will keep you updated in another few weeks. Danielle. 🙂

Good Morning. I wanted to touch base to let you all know Hayu is doing really well. Training is not going as well as I hoped BUT we are still working on it. What I have trained myself to do. If I am going to get up and move, I make sure he is feet on the ground to ensure no jumping. He is a happy boys these days all a couch potato. LOVES his stroller so that is where he chills when I am working. I want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thank you for everything. Danielle and Hayu.

Danielle, what a happy report. Love hearing Hayu is a happy boy! Thanks for stopping in to let us know.
Glad to hear you will continue to work on training Hayu to be safe. You know some dogs just take longer to train. And even those trained still need to periodically get refresher training, just to make sure they know the new routine.
Merry Christmas and a happy New Year for you and your family.
