Hi everyone!
Anyone considering surgery or treatment for IVDD with a neurologist in South Jersey / Philadelphia area should certainly reach out to Dr. Scarano at Red Bank Vet Hospital. She operates out of Mt. Laurel and I believe another location.
She was absolutely incredible. My pup went in dragging his legs (not yet totally paralyzed but almost) and 2 days after surgery, he is wobbly walking! It is truly a miracle. Her team took such great care of my baby and I would highly recommend them to anyone going through this with their own doggy.
State: New Jersey (Southern NJ / suburbs of Philadelphia)
Surgeon: Dr. Jenny Scarano
Hospital: Red Bank Vet Hospital (Mt. Laurel location)
Address: 2051 Briggs Road, Mount Laurel, NJ 08054
(856) 429–4394
Cost: $7,244 (I was quoted initially at $7,600 - 8,800. He did not need to stay in the hospital all 3-5 days as his post-op went so well, so that cut down on the bill. They also did not do a CT scan but an MRI, which I was comfortable with given her high recommendations in the area and commuication with me. They typically do an MRI but it malfunctioned - my luck lol. They could see everything they needed to see with the CT scan.)
Date of surgery: 8/25/21
What was included in cost (MRI?, days stay, ER? PT? meds for home, sling, etc.): Everything needed for surgery and post-op initial recovery. I was quoted initially at $7,600 - 8,800 pre-op. He did not need to stay in the hospital all 3-5 days as his post-op went so well, so that cut down on the bill. They also did not do an MRI, but a CT scan (with my blessing)... I was comfortable with that given her high recommendations in the area and her commuication with me. They typically do an MRI but it malfunctioned while he was under anesthesia - my luck lol. Luckily, she could see everything they needed to do the surgery with the CT scan. The surgery, 5 medications, 2-night hospital recovery stay and CT scan were all included in the final price of $7,244.)
Comments: I utilized care credit for the deposit of the surgery (75% - 6,500) and paid the rest at discharge. It was easy. My biggest recommendation would be -- if your dog is not improving after trying to taper off prednisone (even the first or second time) like my dog was... AND you are in a situation that a neurologist or orthopedic surgeon recommends surgery... AND it is financially reasonable for you to move forward with the surgery... PLEASE DO IT. Do not wait! It is worth it to see your baby happy again. I am so so so happy and thankful at this point. :-)

I had the pleasure of meeting Jenny Scarano at Red Bank this week. She was lovely and caring and explained everything well. She spent a LOT more time with us than I think we were scheduled for as we were sort of stuck in a loop processing what she was saying. Unfortunately, she did <i>not/i> recommend surgery for our 13 year old doggo, Maddie. She said she thought she could fix her, but that with her age, health, and the high likelihood of blowing another disc in 3-6 months, she didn’t feel it would be a good “return on investment.”
I’m mostly posting to update current costs which are now estimated between &9-11K. Our estimate was $9750-$11500. I would still take my other dog to her if, heaven forfend, we need to in the future, but she did not feel surgery was our best course of action.
