Hi everyone I have a 5 yr old mini who last Friday couldn't get comfortable, he was sitting in my lap and just kept squirming. So I put him on the floor and he started to scoot, not the butt scoot but wasn't using his hind legs. No sooner had I called the ER vet to let them know we were on our way and I got his harness, harness means walk time, he started running around like nothing had happened. I did go to the vet were they insisted it was an IVDD issue. My friend, who is a vet thinks it resolved too fast to be IVDD. She worked on my last doxie who had neck problems, she did acupuncture and gave me some chinese herbs, he was good to go in no time. I am aware of how to take care of a doxie, I was raised with them. I carry mine up and down the stairs, he has a ramp to the couch, no hardwood floors, not overweight and on good food, I use a harness. I have also stopped playing ball with him. What now? During cool weather I take him on 2 to 3 mile walks, a normal after work walk is just barely under 1 mile, on sidewalks. Do I need to limit these? Thanks for your help - Cathy and Klaus

Welcome to Dodgerslist Cathy and Klaus. What is your Mini's name? You mentioned he was showing inability to move his hind legs but right away was able to move them.. Has he had any other episodes since then of reluctance to move, shivering or trembling, yelping, loss of appetite, lack of bladder or bowel control? If so crate your dog right away and let him out only to be carried out to potty. A very limited amount of steps to get the job done and then back in his crate..If he is having disc problems too much movement can cause the disc to rupture into the spinal cord..He must be under the care of a Vet that knows how to treat IVDD.. Info about how to make up a recovery suite: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/CrateRRP.htmI am going to give you a links to read about IVDD.. Click athe yellow button and then make your way through all the other buttons.. www.dodgerslist.com/healingindex.htmDid your Vet that you took him too earlier send pain or anti inflammatory medications home for your dog? If so let us know the exact names, dosages and the frequencies given.. If he is on a Steroid OR a NSAID he should be on Pepcid AC as well.. Ask your vet this way: Is there any medical reason why my dog can't take Pepcid AC? Let us know how we can help..

Thanks Pauliana - I'm at work and don't have the meds but I was sent home with muscle relaxers and pain pills, no steriods, interesting since they suspected IVDD. I know from my previous doxie to use Pepcid, when I asked about it, the ER vet didn't think he needed that.
Klaus did not have, trembling, shrivering, yelping, loss of bladder/bowel, nothing. He is doing well and as I said, I have stopped playing ball with him, his favorite thing of all. His appetite is good and he's relieving himself as normal.
I'm not seeing anything about what I can do, are long walks ok? or only short walks?

Avoid long or short walks while on the medications - they will mask problems and cause him to overdo it because he feels fine. Crate rest is still the gold standard when it comes to protecting an injured back - IVDD or other condition. Better to be safe and restrict his mobility until you know for sure what is going on.
