Just a quick update now that it's been 6 months, Siggy is doing great! He has only a very slight limp which is apparent when he runs. He runs more like a bunny rabbit. Oh well, he's still quick when he wants to be. Also, now that it's hot here in Texas, I've introduced him to the swimming pool. Surprisingly he seems okay with being in the big pool as long as I'm in the pool with him. So we will swim to help build up the muscles in his hind legs. And we continue to do home based exercises that his PT recommended. And most important, I have re-trained him that he is NO LONGER allowed to jump. His super man cape has officially been revoked! So despite being under house arrest for Covid-19, I found the time with him to be a blessing. We have greatly improved our walking and he seems to have improved control over his bladder.
So thank you for your help and support during his surgery and recovery process!!!!!

MaryAnne, we appreciate your update. Love to hear how good things are going since the January operation.
Is there any hint of neuropathic pain still present? On or off Gabapentin?
Good for you in not allowing jumping. Siggy has such a conscientious mom in sticking with no jump training!!!

Thus far he hasn't shown any indication of having neuropathic pain. And trust me if he did have any pain, he would let me know. He is quite dramatic! He hasn't taken Gabapentin in a few months as there hasn't been a need.

I just witnessed a new issue with Siggy. Just over an hour ago I saw Siggy have a strange muscle spasm in his hind right leg. This has been his weaker leg as he hasn't been able to scratch his ears with said leg since before surgery Jan 2020. This evening as he was coming into the kitchen, his right hind leg was bucking / kicking as he was walking. It appeared to be a muscle spasm doing the hind leg scratch post potty break. He's not been able to use either hind leg to do the post potty scratch with all 4 legs - only the front legs. Has anyone else reported this sort of reaction? I touched both hind legs and feet and he didn't seem to have any pain....and his tail is still wagging. I know it scared him and it certainly scared the crap out of me. He's been so good with zero jumping and I've been exceptionally careful with him and his back. I have a call into my vet but in the meantime I thought I would reach out and see if anyone else has had this sort of reaction a year and a half post surgery.

Maryanne, I looked through the articles Neuro Surgeon Dr. Isaacs has written for our IVDD community at the Neuro Corner.
"Leg Spasms - Kicking" maybe/might be similar to what you observed: dodgerslist.com/2020/08/15/leg-spasms-kicking
If you would have an opportunity to video next time it happens, that would be helpful.
Let us know what your vet says.

Sounds good. Like the person in the post, he doesn't seem in pain - just freaked out over his leg kicking. I have him at his vet for examination to ensure there isn't any spinal issues going on.
Thanks Paula - I'll report back when I hear more from my vet.
Nothing like a 5pm panic attack to end a Monday evening. Sigh....
