Hi everyone, I'm Danielle and my baby's is Pino. He is a 6 year old standard sable. Two weeks ago tomorrow he had his surgery! The Vet gave him a great prognosis! I took him home crate rested him and gave him all the neccary medication, love and attention. To my surprise a few days ago he was taking his first steps and back to his old self! Just this past Friday he had his surgical follow up, the vet said he was doing well, that he didn't appear to be in pain. He instructed me to allow him more activity and that I could stop giving him the tramadol.
Yesterday morning he was doing well, I put him in his crate and went to work. When I got back later in the afternoon he was shaking and couldn't stand at all! I called my vet, who told me it sounded like he was having some pain, and to resume the Tramadol, for 24hrs, 6 hours a part. After the second dose he seemed a bit better. This morning however, I took him out to piddle and again he wouldn't even try to take a step! He squatted, peed and then stood there, till his back end gave out.
He is now sleeping in his crate, seems very lethargic, which could be from all the pain medication.
Im so worried that something else has happened or that this behavior indicates that the surgery was somehow not successful. I am hopping that he just over did it and that he came off the pain meds too early.
Has anyone ever had a set back like this during your recovery? Any insight or suggestions are welcome , thanks !

Hi Danielle, Welcome to Dodgerslist. Sorry to hear that Pino has had a setback in his recovery after surgery.
Yes, we have seen this happen before. It could be that he has overdone, but there could also be some of the offending disc material left or heaven forbid another disc. I would call your surgeon and talk with them and make an appointment for them to examine. Do you know if the surgeon fenestrated any other discs or mentioned any other problem areas.
