I know this is an IVDD site, I was just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on Vetprofen for long term use or maintenance use. Any side effects or issues with longer regimes since it is an NSAID pain reliever . :-)

Dave, see what I wrote here. All non-steroidal anti-inflammatories -NSAIDs- such as Vetprofen® (carprofen) and steroids have side effects. Even for the typically under short term 30 days use with a disc episode, there can be side effects. I believe you are wanting to know what is the risk vs benefit for use with bladder cancer in particular with your particular dog. That is out of our range of knowledge. Your vet would be a jumping off place to help you weigh anti-inflammatory risk vs the benefit. Anti-inflammatory drugs are miracle drugs for dogs same as for people. When they are needed they do good work to reduce inflammation, allowing for improved enjoyment of life with reduced or no pain. ----- FDA NSAID pkg insert for Carprofen: See the ADVERSE EFFECTS section: animaldrugsatfda.fda.gov/adafda/app/search/public/document/downloadLabeling/221----- This is a clear and concise page from the FDA to help you monitor for safety at home with a NSAID: www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/ResourcesforYou/AnimalHealthLiteracy/ucm196295.htm-----

I must be getting misunderstood. I know this is an IVDD forum ... I'm just wondering about the NSAID use for long term or maintenance. I know NSAIDs are used for IVDD cases, I'm just looking to hear is there are any signs of overuse I should be on the look out for... so if it gets to that point I can take Picky off the Vetprofen.

Dave, the links I gave at the end of my last post should give you the answers you’ve been asking about: adverse side effects and how to recognize them. Let me know if there is something else that you expected but did not find. Hope this helps you out

[Original subject line: A ramp or steps for the couch - small living room]
Currently we have a very ancient washable cover, covered cardboard steps so the wieners can get up and down off the couch. Its falling apart, internally there is more packing tape than cardboard, so we are looking for a replacement.... and its turning into a real question of what to get and what actually helps protect the doxies back.
Having a washable, waterproof cover is a MUST... darn leaky weiners.
I'd love to go with a ramp but we have a small living room and we need to walk around it without tripping. Just ask my wife about tripping, she tripped over a snowflake last winter and ~~SHATTERED~~ two bonez. SO, the less the trip hazard - meaning, shorter, the better.
That leaves steps.
Like I mentioned, we have a washable cover - covered cardboard blocks kind of steps. I would like to get away from the cardboard idea. I saw memory foam steps, I worry that would be too soft for two of these waddling bricks, and then there are these steps that are slanted and rounded making it more of a hybrid steps and ramp, I don't know where my worry is with that other than it looks weird and the dogs might try to by-pass it because they don't know what the heck it is.
Any thoughts or opinions?
Thanks Dave in Kewaskum, WI --- with Spencer an old, stinky, loosing his marbles, 15yr old tweenie, long hair, black & tan w/silver dapple, --- Pepper, the angry German, an almost 5 year old, mini red / wild boar smooth with sharp teeth... --- and the new pup, PEACHES just turned 6 months old, mini, silver dapple, smooth. OMG what a sweetie.
--- Mr Pickle, after years of mastering and ruling the world from his pen and wheelchair, he had to be let go due to bladder cancer. Very sorely missed, even after a year has passed, it still brings tears to my eyes every time I mention my ol friend.

Dave, my condolences to you both on loosing Pickles to cancer. It's been a number of years since I lost my wheelie to cancer too. I know what you mean, my throat can still catch thinking of him. Training is the key to proper using of a ramp. Check out this complete video to learn how to train. And how to teach not to take any shortcuts off the ramp: dodgerslist.com/2020/06/16/training-to-use-ramps/Steps defeat the idea of protecting the discs should a doxie be the 1 in 4 who can be born with IVDD. Typically, it is not til a doxie is 4-7 year old, if there are signs of pain, the vet and owner first learn the dog was born with the disease. The impact of jumping down a step could be bad for a prematurely aging disc if the dog turns out was born with IVDD. Seek a ramp. More about IVDD: dodgerslist.com/2020/06/26/what-is-disc-disease/FOAM ramps 1) An upholstery shop can make a foam ramp with cover for a custom size. 2) You can buy on-llne for example if the right height for your couch. The photo below shows a ramp not high enough for an IVDD dog. Too much of a jump down to reach the ramp. Royal Ramps Pet Ramp Foam ramp 14"H x 14" tall x 29"L with washable cover $159-195 free shipping royalramps.com/royal-ramps-pet-ramp-14-tall/?gclid=CjwKCAjw3oqoBhAjEiwA_UaLtr-8PhRhLLsc28SxVj3F1-EfTcfAdlJxOxeoZKZukmWQXk5UVhl9yBoCKf0QAvD_BwE3) DIY FOAM RAMP Buy flat foam from fabric shop such as JoAnn's. Easily cut to size with a serrated knife. Cut as many triangles to create width desired. Glue together to create one foam triangle ramp. Insert foam ramp into a black garbage bag to protect from liquids and tape closed.. A no sew DIY options is to "gift wrap" with a sheet or textured fabric yardage and secure clossed with a couple of safety pins on the underside of the ramp. Picture of my DIY 16"H x 14"W x 28"L red ramp to a recliner chair in this video: Picture of same DIY foam ramp (with green cover) to couch: Can be a ramp or a back rest Hope this idea will help out protecting human bones and will fit your size living room. I often turned a ramp up to use as my back rest when playing with my dogs on the carpet.
