Hello my name is Kip and my dashund's name is Oskar. He is 5 years old. Thursday evening we went outside and he ran around in the yard fine, sniffing and happy. He ran back to me, stopped and sniffed something particularly wonderful then rolled around in it, got up and ran back up the deck steps and into the house. I do remember his back legs seemed to hit the top steps as if he misjudged them. I didn't give it much thought at the time.
he sleeps in a crate so he went straight to it and to bed for the night. The next morning I opened the crate and he just sat there. I knew something was wrong. He had lost all use of his back legs. I called the vet as soon as they opened and took him in. He does have deep pain sensation.
He stayed there all weekend and I got him back today . No change. He was given steroids and is on prednisone now. 2 tablets a day for 5 days the a reduction to one per for the next 5 and then 1/2 until gone.
Bless his heart.
I have to express his bladder yet he seems to leak or pee on his own or involuntarily . His poop kind of leaks out too. I have him confined to his crate and will do for the next 8 weeks.
no tail wags or any movement of his backend. I am a school teacher so the summer can work out fine for his care. I will not know what to do on the days I am at work during the school year as far as the time lapse between leaving for work and coming home bladder and poop expressing.
Am I doing things right so far to help him?

Hi Kip I'm sure a mediator will be along shortly to answer any questions. The best advice I can give is read, read and, read some more. This site is has a wealth of knowledge on IVDD. You need to make sure he on 100% Strict crate rest. Only out to go to the bathroom. We are going through the same thing and we are on week 2 of crate rest now, We have an acupuncture appointment tomorrow. I hear it really works. Sending healing prayers to Oskar!

Hi Kip welcome to Dodgerslist. Good for you getting Oskar started on crate rest right away. That's an excellent start to his conservative treatment plan of 8 weeks of 24/7 crate rest, only out to be expressed. I wouldn't worry right now about the school year and expressing. His nerves can regenerate and he could gain back bladder control and the ability to walk. There is always hope as swelling goes down, his functions will begin to return. Look forward with hope! There are many Dodgerslist dogs with IVDD that do recover the ability to walk and those that don't live perfectly happy lives on wheels. www.dodgerslist.com/index/SDUNCANquality.htm www.dodgerslist.com/literature/healingpage.htm
What other medications did the Vet send home with Oskar? I didn't see mention of any pain medications? That is vitally important so Oskar can heal without pain. Pain needs to be controlled dose to dose so healing can start and continue. If he does have a prescription please let us know the names, dosages and frequencies given..
I hope Pepcid AC is on the list to protect his tummy from the effects of the Prednisone. It is much better to be proactive in protecting his stomach.. Ask your vet this way.. Is there any medical reason why my dog can't be on Pepcid AC? www.dodgerslist.com/literature/healingpain.htm
Sending healing prayers over the miles for Oskar!

He was not given any other medicine. None for pain or for his stomach. Should i call the vet and ask for some? He doesn't act like he is in pain but he seems depressed. he has always been a very calm little dog.He doesn't try to move which is good for his healing I suppose but it seems like he has lost heart.
I do want to say I am very grateful to have found this board. It is great support.

Kip how are you doing with the expressing? If you are still finding leaks in his bedding, I would have the vet check your work to make sure you are getting him empty. You can express for poop also. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/Expressing.htmYou should get the Pepcid or generic on board asap. Ask the vet if there is any reason Oskar can't have it. Are you upbeat around him. He will pick up on your emotions so try to stay positive around him and assure him everything will be just fine. If you are positive he is not in pain, then he wouldn't need a pain reliever. Most of them we see here are in pain, but one of mine that went totally down did not seem to be in pain. IVDD is a disease of time and patience. Read our short e-presentation www.dodgerslist.com/literature/IVDDcourse/index.html and then read as much as you can on our website to educate yourself on IVDD. It is a disease he will have for life and knowledge is power.
