Charlie's doing well today. I put him back on the pepcid yesterdat & he hasn't vommited again. I stopped giving his pain meds today, he was down to one a day, & he isn't showing any signs of pain. The vet wants to start him back on the prednisone. I'm feeling anxious about this.

Prednisone's job is to reduce swelling in the spinal cord…. prednisone is an anti-inflammatory. If you stop pred and the pain meds and there is no pain, then you have proof there is no inflammation going on in the spinal cord for prednisone to work on. Nerve damage such as wobbly walking, knuckling, or can move legs is not healed by any medications. Nerve healing is something the body does with time and all by itself. Can you give us an update on his neuro functions? Look at the list on this page and let us know where Charlie is: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/healingnerves.htm

Charlie is just at the beginning of Stage 4 - leg movement. I noticed this morning he was able to swing one of his front legs in front of him. He hasn't moved his front legs in over 3 weeks. He's still wobbly on his back legs, but he's moving them more the past 2 days that he has in awhile. Still having trouble with his stomach. I stopped giving him the rice, picked up some wellness food with sweet potato, he lapped it right up. I'm feeding him @ 2 ounces @ every 3 hours just to see if he can keep it down. So far (since early evening) he's been able to keep it down. Hopefully we can get this all under control. I'd love to think that he's on the road to recovery, it's been hard for him. He gets frustrated when I take him out and he can't "take off". He lets me (& the neighbors) know how frustrated he is.....at the same time, it's good to seen signs of my boy's attitude coming back.

Charlie's doing better...I think. His ulcers have cleared up, there is no blood in his stool, I took the rice out of his diet and he's able to digest his food. He's getting picky with his food right now. Last night we had a good night, he was alert, and moved all his legs when we went out, although he couldn't stand up on them. This morning, he's back to not moving much at all, when I pick him up to go out, he goes limp, he made me hand feed him before he would eat from his bowl. The only medication he is on right now is the pepcid, want to make sure his stomach is clear before I remove it. he doesn't show any signs of pain, he just lays on his side and stares at me. I'm hoping he's just a little depressed and we don't have any more issues popping up.

Hi Amy,
Signs of pain are holding the head in an unusual position...head held high or nose to the ground, shivering/trembling, not wanting to move much , yelping, tight/tense stomach muscles, holding leg up flamingo style...not wanting to bear weight on the leg, just not their usual perky-interested-in-life self.
Sounds to me like Charlie is in pain and is not wanting to move around because it hurts..Tyler was laying there staring at us as if to say "help me!" just before we took him to Purdue Veterinary Teaching Hospital, the morning he lost the use of his legs..
Let Charlie's Vet know he is showing signs of pain..
