First, Baxter Boo has been off crate rest for almost three months and is doing great. He loves going for daily walks.
In 2009, Baxter Boo was rushed to the emergency vet at 3AM because he could not walk. The stupid ER vet said he would never walk again and to consider putting him to sleep. I took Baxter Boo to my old vet three hours away (we had just moved to Akron and I had not found a good vet yet). My old vet was knowledgeable about IVDD and after 8 weeks crate rest Baxter Boo recovered. January 2013, we had another episode and after 8 weeks of crate rest he is doing great.
Both in 2009 and again this year, everyone here was so supportive and helpful. When this first happened in 2009, I knew dachshunds were prone to back problems but had no idea about IVDD. I learned a lot from dodgerslist about IVDD, treatment, things to watch for, secondary complications, etc. Not once did anyone try and tell me it wasn't IVDD and not once did anyone try to second guess the vet's diagnosis. This list is great it provides what we need, support, education and information.
I wish all support lists were like dodgerslist. Last week, my 11 year old cat Spencer was diagnosed with FIP, a deadly cat disease which in some cases can be managed. I had hoped to find a list similar to dodgerslist were I could get support, education and information about treatment about FIP. I found a list but I did not get what I was excepting. Instead of providing education, support and information, they are trying to second guess the vet's diagnosis (which was confirmed by a second opinion) and suggest to me all the other things that might be wrong with Spencer (which my vet ruled out and diagnosed FIP only after a long and careful examination and testing).
So I wanted to thank everyone here and say that Dodgerslist is great and has a true support list. You guys are wonderful and it is a shame that all support lists are not like this one.
