Oh Stacey...I just saw this...thinking of you and Freddie so much and really hoping he is feeling much better soon. I can only imagine how scary and frustrating this is for you right now. I am hoping and praying it is just a very minor set back and that the need for crate rest will be minimal. I know it must break your heart to see him in there looking so sad, but you are doing the right thing and should be very proud of yourself for being such a strong mommy! Also, you were so proactive about getting him into the vet immediately when you noticed him limping--that makes a huge difference in recovery! Sending hugs and positive thoughts your way-- hang in there, you are doing a wonderful job!

Stacy, your vet is assuming this diarrhea is related to a the need for an antibiotic rather than an adverse side effect of using steroids Vetalog and Prednisone? I'd be quite suspicious that Fred needs his stomach better protected asap. Please do your reading at the Mar vista vet page about sucralfate which has limited side effects potential and advocate for a 2nd protector in addition to Pepcid AC (famotidine). www.marvistavet.com/html/pharmacy_center.html

Sucralfate is an Rx item available in a 1 gram tablet. "Sucralfate is a sucrose aluminum hydroxide compound that forms a gel-like webbing over ulcerated or eroded tissues, thus serving as a sort of a bandage. It is effective in the upper GI tract: stomach, duodenum (upper small intestine), and esophagus." www.marvistavet.com/html/sucralfate.html

Ugh not Polly too!!! I am so sorry to hear your back up on the conservative list with us..
Here is how we made out...
Er vet agreed with the metro med..they took a fecal and it had blood in it with a high content of bacteria.
So Fred is off pred until stomach gets better.. He is on..the metro..famotidine..sulfate..
I think that is it..sorry meds are in other room..and I am exhausted.
So..Fred hated getting the sulfcrate..she put it in a syringe and let it melt with water. Any tricks to make this easier..I was stressed cause he kept jerking trying not to take it..and spitting it out. Oh and they gave him a shot for neasea.
So disheartening, sad, frustrating, scary and expensive.I feel like he has been in crate doped up forever..and now two more meds in his medicine cabinet...
Sorry..kind of need to vent...so sick of this disease and seeing them in pain or worse...

Stacy, I do understand your frustration. This disease sucks big time, and with all these meds come side effects? You are doing the best you can with Fred. And I believe that with all the love you have, he will get better. You have been such a cheerleader and comforter for many on Dodgerslist. Please accept our support and prayers nw for both you and your sweet Fred.,

This is certainly the place to vent, Stacy. We do understand. It all takes a lot out of us humans, as well, and you and Fred both were barely on your feet when he was ill again. It's hard enough to get through the first disc problem, only to have it happen again and to see your sweet dog hurting again. I think of you and Fred every day. Fred's had a set back but you'll get through this. Blessings to you both.

You did great Stacy, getting the sucralfate on board! When you are less tired in the morning do read about the timing of this med. It needs an empty tummy about 1 hour before feeding to form the gel-like protection. It also should be given at about 30 mins prior to famotidine. www.marvistavet.com/html/sucralfate.htmlI've not found it a problem to pill a sucralfate tablet. I've read of other members having difficulty with syringing. So you might want to try hiding the sucrafate tab in something delicious… my Clark is pretty easy as he likes bananas, mashed microwaved sweet potato. Metronidazole side effects to be aware of and maybe share with your vet in regard to an IVDD dog.: www.vetcontact.com/en/art.php?a=572&tHang in there you and Freddie will get through this again, you will!

Aw Stacey, I'm sorry that you and Fred are going through this We're here for you honey, and you just vent as much as you need to. I know how awful it is to be back on crate rest so soon - Stevie forgave me, and Fred will forgive you too (((hugs))) Try pilling him with the Sulcralfate if the syringe is too hard to do. Sure hope his tummy settles quickly. Metronidazole does work really well to clear up bacterial overgrowth in the intestines that cause horrid, bloody diarrhea. Keeping you in thought and prayer.

Thanks guys it was a an emotional day yesterday to say the least.I have just spent the last 2 days thinking, worrying and examining poop. Unfortinatley this last visit maxed u My reg vet was awesome and called to check up on Fred thismorning and understood my panic.. It seems we are going from one extreme to another...no poopy as of 3:30am. And the 3:30am wasn't as bad..it was brown with red not just all red.Fred is also sporting a new and sassy buzzed butt!! Diarrhea was all in his butt hair. It was either that or bath him after every poop. Not good for the back. So here I sit anxiously waiting for poop..lol.. Not to be gross but boy was it stinky..coukdnt get the smell out of my nose..l had to ask a coworker if she smelled it..was afraid it got in my clothes. Lastnight the vet walked in and said whew...while waving her hand infront of her face ...that's my boy!!! I also realized how good my vet actually is..while he may not do everything according to here he listened to my concerns. He also expresses a great concern and has a great bedside manner. I am going to stick with him The vet from lastnight wanted to muzzle Fred cause he was barking..I told her no he will freak and to just give him a couple of mins to warm up..and not by the hot air coming out of him! She also seemed to be leary of him..but once again Fred showed his true nature and started licking her. Game plan... stay off pred until belly gets better..I am curious to see if the limp comes back..I'm still hoping it is just a pulled muscle and a lesson learned to chill out when it comes to Fred. Fred will also be getting another adequan shot on Saturday..I'm going to stick with it and will let you know the progress. I really appreciate all the support on here and kind words. They mean so much and really do help. Hoping our next post will be about poop..but good poop. The vet said that the metro is fast acting...now off to wally world to get some air freshener...

A vet who listens is an important thing. Also, one who is not threatened by questions. Some seem to be insulted that you would dare challenge their infinite wisdom. Know what I mean?
Tell Fred he may just start a new hairstyle craze. Stranger things have happened! I'm sure the shaving will make things easier for you, and for him.
Keeping my fingers crossed for a normal, blood free poop! Good luck!

Fred finally pooped this afternoon. It was solid with a little blood so I guess the meds are working.
Is there an anti inflammatory that dogs can stay on to help relieve pressure?
I feel like we are worse than when we started..and more broke..last visit maxed us so not sure what we are going to do...

Hi Stacy, NSAIDS and Steroids have side effects so staying on them isn't a good idea.. Normally they are used just long enough to get the inflammation down. Glad his tummy is recovering.. Acupuncture may help Fred later on when finances recover.. I hear you on being maxed.. been there more than few times with Tyler and other pets. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/healingacupuncture.htm

Well...we finally had an ok morning..Fred slept through the night..and had a nice solid poopy this morning with NO BLOOD! and I didn't see any limping. He also made a friend too..when he went off crate rest I had started walking him and taking the stroller for when he tires. the neighborhood is getting to know him as the dog with the stroller. Anyway we have a neighbor that has seen him in his stroller that has a black schnauzer that we saw this morning. Fred was so excited to see another puppy he kept trying to get out of his pen. She asked (which I not a lot of people do) if shadow (her dog) could say hi. What a sweet, handsome gentle dog! Shadow went to the pen and they touched noses and sniffed. Fred want more but befored I said something she picked shadow up and said that was enough..Fred was wiggling so hard you could see how happy he was. It was nice to see a little happiness after this crap week. Tomorrow Fred goes back to vet to get his second adequan shot. Will keep you posted. Keeping everyone here in my thoughts and prayers.

Thanks . I decided to take a brake from posting and reading posts..it just kind of got to me...all these poor pups in pain and us furmom and furdads going crazy trying to help them... Its sad and makes me appreciate the moderators and advocates even more for logging on everyday to help. A huge THANK YOU!! Ok..now in a happier note..our update.. We took Fred to our vet and while there we met 2 doxies..one was being treated for the neck. I have to say what an awesome couple the doxies belonged too. They both have heard of dodgerslist and read posts so if you are reading..HEY!! I hope Annie and doxie are doing well!! It was so reassuring meeting another furmom that is using the same vet for IVDD. Fred got his second adequan shot so we will see... Current meds:: Prednisone 5mg once a day Famotidine half pill every 12 hours Sulfcrate half pill every 8hours Metrodizine 250mg every 12 hours Whew..Fred's meds now take up a complete shelf.. No blood in stools..YAY..one did look dark but waiting to see what the next one will be like..and yes ladies...I do have pictures lol..and I'm not afraid to text them to peeps!! No limp either...I did have him out front yesterday when a huge chocolate lab came running up to us..that wasn't good..Fred went into attack mode and tried to bite him..I picked him up and put my back to the dog..the owner was nice and the dog was friendly..just a bad time to meet..ofcourse I stressed that he hurt himself..boy did he struggle to get out of my arms.. Sorry about the rambling..but some people don't understand the stress we have worry about every move they make during recovery. Sending warm wishes and hugs

Great to hear that Fred no longer has blood in his stool, but you can skip the photos, thanks! And no limp! Very good, Fred.
Oh, I most definitely understand the worry we have. I've taken to carry an air horn with me when I go out in the street with Jeremy. He's been attacked too many times and I'm not taking any chances. A new lady moved in on our street and she has a very nasty acting dog (fights with the dog he lives with and vicious type bark) and she doesn't leash him. I'm afraid to walk past her house. The air horn was given to me when I adopted Jeremy (because we were concerned that he might turn on my cats but he was a sweetheart with them). It lets out a very loud sound that's supposed to break apart fighting dogs or scare another dog away.
Keep up the great work with Fred, Stacy. Glad Fred's doing well.

Hi Stacey Good to hear that Freddie is on the mend. I hate is when people let their dogs run up to mine - they always seem to say " Oh it's okay, he's friendly". Well hey you doofus - maybe mine aren't! ( Stevie is, but Rosie is another story) Keep on truckin' Freddie!

Hi Stacy!
Oh I know what you mean about the neighborhood dogs running up to our recovering pups. I have had too many dogs that act friendly at first then decide to go after Tyler at the last minute and I got very good at getting him out of the way quick.. That was mostly in our old neighborhood and even before IVDD. Those dogs sensed something even before we did, perhaps? Makes me wonder..
In the new river bend area we live in..everyone here is aware of Tyler's IVDD and they keep their dogs away from Tyler when we are out walking. It's a close knit neighborhood and when one of us, or many need help, they hop to it.. It's an amazing place to live... I saw all these folks in action during the floods of 2008.. We had just bought our land way above the flood zone. Neighbors helping neighbors clean up the flood mess. 5 foot of water in their homes.. It was awful but what I saw restored my faith people.. When we moved in last summer, they welcomed us into the fold..
Keep on feeling better Freddie... We missed you Stacy but I totally understand needing a break..

I don't know anything about Adequan, Stacy, other than the information from Dodgerslist that I previously gave you a link to. Have you done any online research about it? From what I could tell from a quick Googling, these are the side effects: Stinging on injection site, Upset stomach, Vomiting, Diarrhea, Depression, Abnormal bleeding. It seems that the side effects are usually mild, the most common being pain at the injection site, which quickly stops, and upset stomach. And there are the cautions on the Dodgerslist link I gave you.
Since Dodgerslist says that it may help IVDD, I was interested in finding someone to give Jeremy the injections and discussing it with them. But he's allergic to beef and Dodgerslist said it should be avoided if that's the case.
How is Fred doing? What are his current meds?
