Comments: Dr. Elaine Caplan, DVM, DABVP, DACVS and all of the staff at this hospital are very familiar with IVDD. I found Dr. Caplan’s name mentioned in discussions of several other successful doxie surgeries on reddit and a few other places online. They took my frantic call and worked my dog Ollie in for a surgery consult and surgery the same day. Dr. Caplan showed us anatomy images and talked us thru every aspect of the surgery after giving Ollie a very thorough neuro exam. CT revealed that my chihuahua/dachshund mix had a disc that ruptured and was invading 80% of his spinal canal as well as 3 other bulging discs. He had lost the use of one of his back legs and was rapidly declining prior to surgery. It was so bad the surgeon was surprised he was walking at all. The night after his surgery, the staff texted me a photo of Ollie and gave me timely updates about his health. It was clear that Ollie was loved and well cared for while he stayed at the hospital post-op. The quick, compassionate treatment of my dog was a success. We go back for a follow-up next week, but already it looks like he will make a full recovery. They quoted me a range of possible cost up-front and I paid a deposit. The total amount ended up being less than my deposit (a very pleasant surprise) and I was refunded the difference. I appreciated that there were no unpleasant surprises with the billing. I will trust Dr. Caplan with any of my dogs.
