I'll check but since she has no heart problems and her kidneys and liver are OK I don't know why not. Do I just give her the broth to drink? I'm already giving her water with her kibble. Thank you.😊

If the vet has no objections, I think you should just offer it to her.

I've decided to try getting Nala to drink more water this week and see if it makes a difference. Her x-ray isn't scheduled until next week. I've read about putting some peanut butter powder in water and also a little meat food. And of course, chicken broth. We'll see if it helps. Cross your fingers. After the urinalysis and blood work it would be nice to avoid another procedure if possible.

Yippee! I've added 1/2 cup of water 2x daily to Nala's food and gave her a tiny spoonful of meat food mixed into water once. And it seems to be working. She peed twice today and the second time was pale yellow. We pet parents get excited about the funniest things! LOL.

Julie, that is good news that a bit more hydration helped.
It may be that Nala was not drinking from her water bowl during the day just getting the moisture you soaked her kibble food in?
Just to confirm, Nala did not pee on her own, but you expressed her??
Do give the vet feedback that you are now increasing her water intake for his file on Nala.

Nala didn't pee on her own. But she did have enough pee in her to express 2x. Evidently she's not drinking from the water bowl so I'll just have to be diligent about providing extra and monitoring the amount.

I am concerned because I feed both my dogs this food and have been hearing a lot of negative stuff lately. It seems like every time you turn around another pet food has been recalled. I'm just not someone who cooks but I'm beginning to wonder if that's not the only alternative. Any ideas? Did anyone see this post? I've been seeing a lot of recalls, too, Julie, and am not sure what to do. We know processed foods aren't good and yet we feed our dogs these hard highly processed kibbles. Most likely the most healthy food would be food we prepared ourselves. We would have to familiarize ourselves as to exactly what should be in that diet. But I'm a vegetarian and would have a difficult time cooking meat for Jeremy, although I know that the food that I currently give him has meat in it. I haven't bought meat and cooked it in over 15 years and don't want to start. Raw food might be an option but there is controversy about that, too. Plus Jeremy has allergies and I've finally found a food that he tolerates well so I don't really want to change from that. Luckily the Kirkland food that I give him hasn't had a lot of recalls. I think Blue Buffalo only had the one food recall recently, at least that I've heard about. www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-recall/blue-buffalo-dog-food-recall-february-2017/

I'm spreading the word to Blue Buffalo users that the company has LIED through their teeth about their product. In a major lawsuit with Purina, Blue Buffalo admitted they lied about not having chicken meal, corn, and grain, in their food. They're paying $32 million dollars. I've used them for years for both my dogs and was shocked. And one of my dogs is allergic to chicken. Pauliana has helped me find a new healthy kibble and I'm going to start adding fresh vegetables/fruit. My sister is a vegetarian also but when her old dog got finicky about eating she made her steak to tempt her appetite.

Took Nala on an overnight trip for my nephew's wedding. She did great and the little stinker even slipped out of the hotel room and went racing down the hall. Hard to believe just a few months ago she had two back to back crate rest's!

[Nala's big adventure]
So someone forgot to tell my Nala she's 12 and has IVDD. Came home from work this morning and the little stinker had gotten over a baby gate and gotten stuck in the spare room! Luckily she seems fine. You'd never believe she's had surgery and numerous crate rests. She's just too stubborn to quit!

Hi Julie, I wonder if Nala got startled by Fireworks last night while you were at work? Not sure if it was as noisy out your way as it was here last night.. Horseshoe bend across the river were doing their yearly fireworks, two sets of neighbors were shooting them off.. We all felt surrounded.. All my pets were freaked out, even with calmers and we have this to look forward to (NOT!) until after July 4th. Glad the intrepid Nala is ok..maybe she found a quieter place to hide in the spare room..

Our poor pets! I've been giving Nala a sedative every night and keeping the air conditioner on for white noise. She's phobic about storms already.

Julie, how is Nala doing tonight. No issues since her ordeal with the baby gate?

No she seems fine. No signs of damage. She's a tough little girl. I'm giving her a sedative because of the fireworks. She's phobic about storms and loud noises. Nala seems intent on giving me heart failure with her "adventures!"

I'm glad to hear that Nala is OK, Julie. Jeremy also gets upset with fireworks and the very loud firecrackers neighbors have been setting off all around us. I can't say I'm too fond of them myself. Rest easy there, little Nala - quieter days ahead.

OK I've been expressing Nala completely for years, plural.
Today while out walking I tried to express but her bladder didn't feel full.
A couple steps later she squatted and peed!!
Has anyone else ever heard of this happening??
Shes squatted before but nothing came out.

Julie, that is the best news! A Christmas miracle indeed! Oh yes it happens, and Nala is living proof that there is no time limit for nerves to heal! I am so happy for you and Nala!

I'm not sure if it will happen again. Tonight I expressed as usual. Wondering if new nerve healing is taking place or if it's a fluke. Anyway, it made my day. Funny what makes pet parents excited. If I see more progress I'll let you know.😀

Nala may be at the beginning of getting bladder control back, so continue to do the sniff and pee test outside starting tomorrow..and follow it with a quick express check to make sure she is empty. She has the ability now,she proved that. Likely she just needs to get back into the habit of going on her own. It's been awhile. Thanks for keeping me posted..

What wonderful news, Julie! I do hope that bladder control is returning for Nala. I know Jeremy showed some improvement in his bladder control after several years. For three years I put a belly band on him at night because, while he didn't leak in his bed during the night, when he stood up in the morning, he would leak as he walked away from his bed. But then the belly band started being dry each morning until finally I was able to do without the belly band. He hasn't gone back to needing one for the last couple of years. He hasn't regained complete control but it was quite a surprise to see improvement years after his initial injury.
Looking forward to more improvement for Nala!

Julie, as you can imagine we will be very interested in you keeping us updated.
With Nala's conservative episode back in Oct 2016 you mentioned she had never regained bladder control with the surgery in 2007. The fact that she had in the past squatted but no urine was released likely tells she feels the need to go, but didn't yet have the ability to control the elimination part. Yesterdays observing a squat and then release of urine is very, very interesting....sure do hope you will be able to report more instances of being able to control elimination.

I'm planning on going to Florida on spring break for vacation.
We're driving from Michigan. Nala is OK in cars but doesn't relax.
Thinking of giving her an acepromazine and setting up a laundry basket with cushions and rolled up blankets.
She hates crates and will not tolerate them.
I never travel.
Any ideas for Nala's care?
Thanks 😀

You've given her acepromazine before, correct? And that usually helps calm her down?
How do you usually transport her to the vet's office? Maybe she'd be so happy to be going for a ride in the car that she would tolerate a crate. If not, could the laundry basket be secure with a seat belt so it won't shift when you stop and start? And it's deep enough so she can't get out of it?

She has taken acepromazine before while on crate rest.
I took her on a 2 hour car ride last year and she was calm but SAT up the whole time.
I must admit when we go in the car I let her sit in my lap.
I was thinking while traveling I could have her by me in a laundry basket. Or I saw a snuggle soft bag I could carry her in like a purse.
Linda thought that might not have enough back support though.
Nala hates crates.

Hi Julie! I wonder if Nala would like a pet booster seat. You might check with your local pet store and see if they have one in stock that would work for her. I would try to find one that she could lay down comfortably in.. She will be sleepy with the Acepromazine being given, hopefully. They can be seat belted in and they have leash restraints to secure to Nala's harness for her safety. Chewy.com has a couple of them in different sizes. www.chewy.com/solvit-deluxe-tagalong-pet-booster/dp/53720 www.chewy.com/kh-pet-products-bucket-booster-pet/dp/46567Ask your Vet what they recommend to keep her relaxed..
