Hi. I have two 8 year old daschunds who have been in quarantine in South Africa for 6 months. They are currently in Sydney, Australia for 1 months quarantine before joining us in Perth. Maya and Hansie are brother and sister, both with disc disease. Maya has had two back op's and her brother has had one. Quarantine contacted me yesterday to say that Maya won't walk, eat and is shivering. I have contacted the vet who is going to see her this morning. I have requested pain med's and cortisone for her. She is in a boarding kennel, so is confined. It is so hard not being with her and seeing for myself what is wrong. I pray it's not her back again. If anyone has advice on anything else I can do, please let me know. Tracy

Welcome to Dodgerslist Tracy! It's best with Maya's history of IVDD to assume she is having another disc episode. Glad you have requested the pain medications and a steroid for her. When you can let us know what medications, the dosages and the frequencies given. Also since she is going to be on a steroid, she also needs to be on Pepcid AC or a stomach protector to avoid Ulcers or a stomach bleed. Ask your vet if there is any medical reason why she can't take Pepcid AC or the generic Famotidine. Since she isn't under your care while in Quarantine, it is neccessary to educate the ones caring for her while in Quarantine. Try to find out from them if she has lost the ability to walk and if she has bladder control. If she doesn't she will need to be expressed. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/Expressing.htmIf she still has bladder control, tell them she needs to be carried out to potty while supporting her back. and kept confined the rest of the time. It would be very hard worrying from a distance and not being able to be with her. Keep in close touch with them by phone and be her advocate for her medical care.. Please read these links: www.dodgerslist.com/faq.htm www.dodgerslist.com/healingindex.htmHealing wishes for Maya
