My husband is a Vet, I have been a breeder of Dachshunds for 16 yrs. We have many friends who own dachshunds and have treated many Dachshunds with IVDD, conservatively, even our own, and this has been the tried and true regimen we have used over the years. Adequin 1cc per 20 lbs IM 3 times weekly x 2 weeks, 2 times weekly x 2 weeks, 1 times weekly x 2 weeks Dexamethasone 1cc per 20lbs, IM, daily x 7 days, every other day x 7 days, then every other day, every 2 days, every 3 days....so on to taper them off. If the dog backslides and appears to be getting worse, kept on Dex injections every 2-3 days. Some people do IV Dex, however we have done the above regimen with GREAT success. Robaxin 500 mg tabs 1/2 tab twice daily Tramadol 50 mg tabs, 1/4 tab for a 12 lb dog, twice daily. Zantac 75mg, 1/2 tab twice daily Strict crate rest for 8 weeks. The Steroid injections are always given to GI discomfort, meaning high dose and daily until the dog shows signs of GI discomfort, which is usually vomiting, then we skip a day, decrease the dose, keep up the Zantac and see how their GI is managing, also how they are managing with pain, appears to be doing well or getting worse. Injectable Steroids are like 100 times more potent than Prednisone. I have seen numerous dogs backslide during treatment and then they are put back on the steroid injections, many are not being strictly crated. I have also seen a dog stay on this regimen for nearly 6 months to completely recover. Many vets are not giving the Adequin, which I think helps considerably. I had a friend call me and tell me that she had accidently given the Adequin daily to her female and was worried she would have killed her dog only to have the dog that was completely down, walking a week later. Maybe the above regimen is too conservative in consideration to the use of Adequin. In reality, we don't start Pred until it is quite late in the regimen unless the dog responds quickly to the Steroid injections and is already acting normal. Sorry...Should have added my name Beckie Decker

Hi there, my name is Lisa, what's yours? Thank you for sharing your conservative treatment method with us. I think it is important to be aware of all drug/supplement options, especially since some vets disagree with steroid use altogether, and some disagree with Adequin use for disc injuries. It is always interesting to see what has worked and what hasn't. I'm glad to see you follow the 8-weeks of strict crate rest for conservative treatment. You may be interested in reading through some of our Success Stories to get an idea of the different recoveries our pups have had, and what drugs/supplements were used. It is quite amazing how different recoveries can be. Some dogs stand up a week into treatment, and others, like my Goosie, require a much longer recovery period (took him 11 months after his surgery to walk again). www.dodgerslist.com/monthstory.htmThanks again for sharing your wisdom with Dodger's List! Best wishes, ~Lisa
