On Wednesday, I woke up to find my black and tan dachshund, Darby could not walk. He still had some feeling in his legs but he couldn't stand. I immediately rushed him to the ER vet, where they took X-RAYs and determined he had a C-5 vertebrae displaced disc. I then rushed him to UC Davis animal teaching hospital, where they did the ultrasound, MRI, and emergency surgery on his neck. Once they had gone in, they found that a piece of the cartilage between C-4 & C-5 had broken off due to some type of trauma (unkown at this point). He is currently stable, with a catheter. His IV was taken out, and he is eating a bit. He is also able to sit on his tummy. He is my son, my whole world. Please pray for him.
Thanks,
Sarah

Welcome to Dodgerslist Sarah. Sending lots of prayers for Darby. I am glad his surgery was successful and he is stable and eating. That's a great start! To get prepared for Darby's homecoming please read these links so you are prepared in advance before he comes home. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/CrateRRP.htm www.dodgerslist.com/literature/cervical.htmI learned early on that I needed to become knowledgeable about IVDD in order to become an advocate for my dog and to give him the care that he needed when he lost the use of his back legs one morning in late January. He too had surgery the same day and after 6 weeks of crate rest recovered very well indeed. Darby will too! So take a deep breath and know your beloved Darby will be home with you soon and read all you can, so you can feel comfortable in talking with the surgeon on discharge day. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/dischargequestions.htm
