--Name: Max Scott 4 years old
--Dachshund diagnosed with IVDD
-- Became Paralyzed overnight on 05/03/13 and had surgery on 05/04/13. 100% STRICT crate rest 24/7?
-- No Deep Pain Sensation before or after surgery, one of his discs went into his spine. Total of 3 removed
-- 2 meds post surgery that are being given to him are Carprofen and Tramadol
-- No feeling in the hind legs tail, also has no control of his bladder or bowels ?
-- No?
-- Eating and drinking OK Eating and Drinking is fine. ?
-- Poops OK - normal color no dark or bright red blood? : No control of bowels just got him back from the vet and has not discharged any yet.
I came home from work Thursday on 05/02/13 and noticed Max was limping somewhat so I caged him overnight and when I woke up on Friday 05/03/13 he was paralyzed in his hind legs and tail. I had work that day and took him when to the vet when I got off at 2:00 PM they told me to go to a neurologist for dogs and I did, they wanted almost 4 k for the MRI and estimated 6 - 7 k for the surgery so I took him the next day to Virginia Tech Veterinary School for the operation for around 3,200. I know time was precious in this situation but I could not simply afford 11 - 12 k in vet bills. He got the surgery and I picked him up on 05/08/13 he currently has no control of his bladder or bowels. He showed no signs of back problems and I never let hit jump off high things as much as I could control. Any advice aside from what the doctors told me to do?

Max is one of the only joys in my life besides my family in fact he is my family, I am so crushed right now... does anyone have Skype because I would love to chat with someone who went through this and could possibly help me out?

If I could switch positions with my dog I would at least he would know what he was going through.... he is such a lively dog and watching his facial expressions now sadden me to the point of despair.

Welcome to Dodgerslist! My name is Pauliana, what is your name? Please let your Max know with your utmost confidence that things are going to be ok…because they will be. With this disease self education is critical not just so you make sure the right things are being done for the best recovery but for your own emotions. The unknown is simply a scary place. Get ready to fight this disease now and in the future by knowing all things IVDD. There is no better place to start than on our main web page with "Overview: the essentials" and then read all you can as soon as possible. Here's the link www.dodgerslist.com/healingindex.htm Add this comprehensive "must-have" $3 DVD on IVDD to your arsenal of educational resources. Friends, family and those who will be caring for your dog should also watch this DVD; plus don't forget to order one DVD for your vet www.dodgerslist.com/store/DVDorder.htm In order to help you more, could you please answer these questions? Are you now doing 100% STRICT crate rest 24/7 only out to potty and for surgeon directed PT? …. No laps, no couch, no sleeping in bed with you, no meandering, scooting or dragging around during potty times. No chiro (aka VOM)? What did your surgeon direct for PT and for crate rest?-- Is there still currently pain - shivering, shaking, crying when picked up or moved? -- What are the exact names of meds currently given, their doses in mgs and frequencies? Please include the all important stomach protector such as Pepcid AC. Here are some helpful videos with tips on expressing both urine and poop: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/Expressing.htm Laser light therapy, acupuncture and electroacupuncture which sends a microcurrent of electricity to and from acupuncture points (which are really big nerve bundles), can be very beneficial at helping to re-establish the nerve connections in the body. Any one of these therapies can be started right away if in your budget... they not only help relieve pain and inflammation but will kick start nerves to begin regeneration. Find a holistic vet here: ahvma.org/Widgets/FindVet.html www.serenityvetacupuncture.com/index.php/faq_/ [one vet's overview/prices] NOTE: Chiropractic is not recommended for IVDD dogs. Please keep us posted on how Max is doing.. My Tyler had surgery at the end of January and is now fully recovered and I hope the same for your Max. There is hope. IVDD dogs can have a great life.. Dogs don't think about what they can't do, they think about what CAN do. With crate rest many Dodgerslist dogs regain the ability to walk and if they don't they run on wheels and are perfectly happy as long as they have love. Sending comfort your way..

Hello, You did get Max to surgery soon after he went down. Usually there is a 24-48 hr window for a good outcome, although we have seen dogs who had surgery much later recover well.
What was the surgeon's prognosis, although they generally tend to be on the negative side. Did they give you any post-op instructions as to PT or therapy. There is always some post-op swelling for ten days to two weeks after surgery. After that you may see more progress. Are you having any problems expressing?
