☀︎1-- LuLu, 6 year old miniature long-haired dachshund! ☀︎2-- 11 lbs ☀︎3-- Is the surgeon a specialist surgeon (ACVIM neurology or ACVS)? Specialist ☀︎4-- LuLu's surgery was 9/4/15 around 3am and she has been home since 9/6/15. ☀︎5-- LuLu is going to a professional rehab. She started on her first real session 10/12 and they want her to go once a week for 5 weeks then be reevaluated again. They are doing laser therapy, underwater treadmill. ☀︎6-- Her surgeon is not helping me at all first they said 6 weeks, now it seems like 2 months, but they don't return my phone calls. I am curious how long others keep their doggies in crate rest after surgery and what exactly you do afterwards! LuLu can walk but her right leg is just a bit weaker and she does not put all of her weight down. She also won't really let me do the small PT they said I can do at home - she gets very nervous and walks to lick me and has muscle spams. But, when they did no the PT at the rehab she seemed okay. ☀︎7--She does not appear to be in pain. ☀︎8-- HELP ON THIS!! I was first told to give her gabapention 3 times a day every day while she's in physical therapy - then her surgeon who also told me this told me then to stop it and I can judge when she needs it. I don't know how I am supposed to do that. How long do other dogs stay on gabapention? PLEASE HELP!! ☀︎9-- She can walk, wobbly and a little funny with how she replaces her feet. She also wags her tail. I am not sure how long she should stay in crate rest - it's over 6 weeks and she is barely moving around because she is in the crate. Should I take her out more often? help!! ☀︎10-- Do you find wet bedding or leaks on you when lifted up? No ☀︎11-- Eating and drinking OK? Poops OK - normal color no dark or bright red blood? Yes. I am also giving her 1 ml omega 3 oil with her dinner.

Hi and welcome to Dodgerslist. Everyone here has an IVDD dog so you have come to the right place. What is your name? I am Romy. I am glad that Lulu is recovering from her surgery. What we see most often after surgery is that the surgeon will recommend 4-6 weeks of crate rest to prevent damage to the surgical site. After that there should be a gradual return to activity to build up muscles and stamina. Always observe and restrict movement if there is soreness. Always use a leash and harness to control your dog and not put stress on the neck and back. No more collars. Since Lulu is still wobbly, add a sling to help stabilize her rear and prevent flopping or falling over. You can find more information about returning to activity after crate rest and a timeline of activity here: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/AfterCrateRest.htm Your rehab specialist will also be able to give you more specific advice on increasing Lulu's activity. Gabapentin is most often used for nerve pain. If Lulu is not showing signs of pain, there is no need for pain medicine Many dogs have been greatly benefited by water therapy. We used the underwater treadmill for Frankie's PT after surgery. It really, really helped.

Hi all!
I want to start giving my LuLu cell advance 440 capsules - how can I give them to her?
Could I open the capsule and put it into some wet food? How do people do this? I am also giving her omega 3 oil at dinner time with her food.

I am not really familiar with cell advance 440, but I believe it is a capsule that can be opened and put on her food, or fed to Lulu like any other medication. It is important to keep your vet in the loop about any supplements Lulu is taking. We have some general information about supplements here: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/Supplements.htm
