Hello my name is Rita. I have a 4 year old doxie named Rico who about 13 days ago hurt his back. We took him to the vet and were told to keep him on bed rest for about a week. I'm on week two of the rest. The next step would be surgery but I can't afford it right now. I just want to know what other alternatives are out there to help him. I know I'm only on the second week of bed rest but I just wanna know what my options are and if anyone could suggest anything to help me would be highly appreciated.

Welcome to Dodgerslist Rita, To quickly get up to speed on IVDD please begin your reading here. www.dodgerslist.com/literature.htm
In order for us to help we need more info about Rico's medications currently and we need to know the dosages and the frequency they are given.
Is Rico safely in his crate during his "bed rest"? If not he should be. It is neccessary in conservative treatment for his back to be kept completely still to avoid further injury to his spine. The link above will show you how to create a recovery suite for his 8 week, 24/7 crate rest. He should be carried out to potty, being sure to support his back in order to keep it straight. See the video on how to carry an IVDD dog in the above link. Limit his walking to very few steps. What date did he begin crate rest?
Can Rico walk? Is he showing signs of pain? (yelping, shivering, tight hard tummy, afraid to move..are all signs of pain) Does he have bladder control?
Continue your education here..www.dodgerslist.com/healingindex.htm so you can become an advocate for Rico in making sure he gets the right Vet care..
Healing wishes!
