Stevie was paralysed on Jan 26th. She never exhibited much for pain, remained continent and had deep pain reflex in her back feet. She did get a bladder infection about 3 weeks into treament but it was caught right away and treated. Treatment-Immediate cage rest for 8 weeks, only out to potty. - prednisone 5mg twice a day for 5 days, the once a day for 5 days, then every other day for 5 treatments. - Tramadol 25mg twice a day as needed for the first 2 weeks- Stevie has epilepsy for we had to be very careful with this one because it can lower the seizure threshhold. - laser therapy twice a week for 4 weeks, then once a week for 4 weeks, now every other week for 1 month then as needed. - accupuncture twice a week for 4 weeks, then once a week for 4 weeks, now every other week for one month, then as needed. The accupuncture Vet also did laser after the accupuncture treatment. She had her first rehab/physio at 7 weeks and was fitted with a rented wheelchair for land based rehab - she's not a big fan of water immersion- we went home with a series of exercises She had her second rehab last week - the rehab lady had tears in her eyes when Stevie ran to her - a bit wobbly due to the weaker left hind, but running - we returned the chair, and got a new list of exercises. 11 weeks to the day after she was paralysed, she passed her St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Evaluation Never again to do stairs, we only have 2 steps to the outdoors and we have a ramp into the dog yard, no jumping on or off furniture, and we laid area rugs all over the hardwood so that she could get better traction. Our house does look like it was decorated by an insane decorator, but it works well and the Grandkids like it

Hi there! My name is Lisa. Welcome to Dodger's List. We're glad you found us. It sounds like you have a very knowledgeable IVDD vet! 8 weeks of strict crate rest plus meds is what we follow with our own dogs, and we have culled that treatment information from our experience with Board Certified neurologists and highly experienced IVDD general vets. Glad to hear that Stevie is WALKING!! Wonderful news. Also happy that she is getting laser and acupuncture. That really made a difference for my dog, too. Feel free to read through our extensive literature here: www.dodgerslist.com/literature.htmWe have an excellent dvd on IVDD available for only $3 including shipping! It's great to have on hand to show to family/friends/petsitters so they will know what they can and cannot do with Stevie and how they can help: www.dodgerslist.com/store/DVDorder.htm Sounds like you've done a wonderful job with Stevie throughout her IVDD episode. Congratulations on her becoming a therapy dog - wow! Feel free to ask any questions you may have, or browse through some of our Success Stories to make you smile (my dog's story is under Goosie Sullivan): www.dodgerslist.com/monthstory.htmBest wishes, ~Lisa

I do wish that the Vets were more knowledgeable about IVDD- most of what was done for Stevie was because we burned up the internet looking for information, and then pushed like heck to make it happen. Like finding a certified accupuncture Vet and a rehab/ physio place. All of these were available nearby, just that they weren't really advertised. I just found this forum, sure wish that I had found it 11 weeks ago! This is a wealth of information

I agree with you! Dodgerslist exists to support IVDD dogs and their owners, especially when they don't get satisfactory answers from their vets. IVDD is not a fatal disease. It is very treatable, yet we find some vets still recommend euthanasia simply because a dog can't walk. We are doing our best to spread the word that IVDD is not a fatal disease and it is very treatable. You can help by ordering our FREE literature and handing it out to vets and other owners of IVDD-prone dog breeds such as dachshunds, pekingnese, shih tzus, beagles, French bulldogs, etc: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/litorder.htm I see you've been giving excellent support to your fellow members - thank you so much!! IVDD episodes can be very stressful, especially for first-timers. It is always SO comforting to hear from other members who have experience with the disease. Best wishes, ~Lisa

I've already ordered the literature :0 and will be handing it out to the Vets and pet supply place that told me about the accupuncture, and anywhere else that I can think of!
