Hi, I was on the other group for dodgerslist and just transfered to this one. I had been updating you guys about Zeus, my dachsund with IVDD. He has had acute problems since Feb 2013 when he began crate rest and medical treatment. He just had surgery Monday, the 8th of April. The xrays showed 3 bulging disc during the medical treatment. The MRI showed lesion at T12-13 on the right most consistent with disc herniation, comprising approximately 70% of canal diameter. The doctor said this was a chronic disc. There was cord swelling. They performed "hemilaminectomy T12-12-right, removed disc material, explored canal, parital corpectomy, lavage, free fat graft". The final diagnosis was Intravertebral disc herniation. He has a Fentanyl patch 12mcg for three days and is resting in crate at home. You can tell he feels better and wants out of the crate. That's my update.

Hello! Thanks for the update on Zeus. Glad to hear he made it through the surgery okay and is resting comfortably. We follow what the most knowledgeable IVDD surgeons recommend for post-op care, and that is 6 weeks of crate rest. The dog is allowed out for potty breaks and whatever physical therapy is prescribed by the surgeon. What PT did your surgeon prescribe? A pet stroller can be a huge help during and after crate rest - really gives the dog a lot of mental stimulation while keeping them safe. When the dog is off all meds, you can take them on strolls in quiet areas on smooth surfaces. Does wonders at reducing their boredom: dodgerslist.com/literature/strollers.htm How is Zeus neurologically? Does he have deep pain sensation? Bladder control? We look forward to hearing more! Welcome to the new site. Best wishes, ~Lisa

He said he didn't need any physical therapy and he would stay in crate for 2 weeks and then re-check. He said to use his old medicines until run out and then stop. He has bladder control and seems to feel better. Too much better for crate rest.

That is great news that he has bladder control! That is proof that nerve messages are being able to travel from the brain through the spinal cord. Usually the best physical therapy for a dog that can walk is...(drum roll, please) walking. :-)
Congrats on Zeus's successful surgery. Best wishes for a smooth recovery. ~Lisa
