Sandy is a mixed breed possibly wire-hair terrier. He is eight years old and 25lbs. He has not officially been diagnosed or even seen the vet at this point. We will call tomorrow. Sandy had IVDD surgery five years ago. He had a full recovery and til two weeks ago was doing well. We noticed him walking funny ordered meds and we both decided we were over-reacting to the situation. He was doing fine til last night. While walking he was hunched over holding his neck in a tight position and shivering. So he is in a crate only to potty outside. He is taking 25mg. of Tramadol twice a day and 5 mg of Prednisone twice a day.
We are going to take him to see the vet tomorrow. I think we need to talk about meds to make sure he is on the right dosage if it is IVDD. We started giving him the Pepcid AC too.
Is there any sure way of knowing besides doing a MRI? Your site pulled us through this very long process last time and grateful for all the knowledge and information you share. Deb

Hi Deb, a Board Certified neurologist may be able to see vertebral fractures, disc space narrowing and calcifications on x-rays, however herniations will only show up on MRI, CT Scan, or myelogram. The latter studies are usually done right before surgery.
Is the Tramadol not enough to eliminate his pain? Signs of pain are shivering/trembling, nose held high or low, a tight-feeling tummy (like a drum), lack of appetite, reluctance to move, yelping, and panting. If he is in pain, ask for an addition pain reliever such as the muscle relaxant, methocarbamol, or the nerve pain medication, gabapentin. Remember, it is the 8 weeks of strict crate rest that heals the disc while the meds mask the symptoms.
Please let us know how the vet visit goes tomorrow. Best wishes, ~Lisa
