Hello,
Oscar, 6 years old, had surgery on Sept 28. Since then, he seems to be ok, not 100%. He cries sometimes when I pick him up, I pick him up very carefully, his hind left leg knuckles over if he walks longer than 5 minutes and his hind right foot twists in when he walks. I am wondering if his problems are to be expected or if I should make my way back to Montreal again.
I brought him from Labrador to Montreal for his surgery, this was a two leg flight and 1.5 hour drive each way. The hospital wanted to see him two months after his surgery but I could not travel that far again so soon.
I have started him back on Gabapentin again the past week.
Thank you, Maylin

Hi Maylin, sorry to hear Oscar is still having pain. Did he just start this knuckling or has he done that ever since surgery? Have you had him back to your regular vet for an exam. Have you done any water therapy or PT with him? Does the Gabapentin help at all?
BTW, we have another new member who just had surgery from Labrador. Her dog's name is Link. I'm not sure where they had the surgery done, but you might want to get in touch with her. I did tell her about you too.

Hi Linda, Oscar has had some knuckling over since his surgery, it hasn't been too bad. His right foot has twisted alot and seems to be getting worse. I noticed the knuckling over this week, I just started walking him now since there has been snow on the ground since his right weeks crate rest. I'm hoping it is just weak muscles and continued short walks will help. I spoke to the neurology department in Montreal, they asked me to email a video of him walking and sitting, which I did tonight. I did have him to our local vet, she put him back on Gabapentin and done an X-ray to see if it could be something else, he is showing some arthritis in his left hip. I did do pt and water therapy for a couple months but havnt for anwhile now, inguess inshould have continued. I'll continue with the Gabapentin for the next week and see how he does.

Hi Allison, Are you still in PEI? How is Link doing? What kind of dog is he? I had Oscar there a few years ago for a biopsy, they are good there. I would have brought Oscar there or surgery but it would have taken too long for us to get there. Take care, I know how hard and stressful it is being away from home.

Maylin, did he show pain when he was examined by the vet? Let us know what they say when they look at the video. Is he still in pain with the Gabapentin?

Hello, Jair a quick update. I'm still waiting to hear from the animal hospital, I did email videos to them. I have walked Oscar for appx 10 minutes three days. Both of his hind paws have sores on them now and bleed. I put booties on him and they still wore and bled. I have videos on FB, I'll try to post the link here to view them.

Maylin, have you heard back from the hospital yet? Did they have an opinion? He looks like he is walking very well to me. Is he always on the hardwood floor?

I haven't heard back yet, hopefully today. I'm concerned about him dragging his hind toes, maybe I just don't know what his new normal is yet. We have all hardwood, unfortunately. He walks the same outside. I find he hooks up in rugs/mats if I put them down. I'm happy he looks good to you, you defdinately have more experience than I.

I was talking to the vet today. They wondered why I waited so long to start walking Oscar, I explained how much snow (we had roughly 5 feet)we get here and the snow is just gone now I was concerned walking him in the winter because the snow is so unstable and he couldn't step over the snow with his short legs. They think he may be weak from inactivity or it could be neurological damage. They don't think he is in pain (I had him to our local vet today also) and that either his walking will improve (he does walk pretty good) or it could be his "new normal". So I am happy and relieved to hear this from my local vet and the neurologist who performed his surgery

Maylin, glad you were finally able to talk with both vets. Keep doing PT with him and see if you can get him in the tub. Nerves continue to heal and connect for months and even years.

Hi Maylin, We have slippery hardwood floors too. I went to Walmart and bought a bounch of inexpensive 5'x8' rugs to put eveywhere to give Stevie better grip when relearning to walk. This has helped her alot. Our house looks like it was decorated by an insane person, but it really has helped and our Grandkids love it! ( I really don't care what anyone else thinks about our new decorating scheme)
