When I try to get him to walk, he stands in one place or leans back. He got weaker during crate rest but had a very sloppy walk prior. The Vet Neurologist has examined my dog and says that he can walk but it will be a lot sloppier. I do have an acupuncturist/laser therapy lined up for him in hopes that will work. Should that help him walk? Or is there something else I could do? Thanks.

Welcome to Dodgerslist, Stella. What's your dog's name? Did he have a full 8 weeks of strict 100% 24/7 crate rest, only being carried in and out to do potty? Did he just get off of crate rest? Take it very slowly at first. His muscles and stamina need to be slowly built up again. Here's a good schedule that I found helpful after my Jeremy graduated from crate rest. Be sure to use a sling to help support his hind end when attempting to walk him. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/AfterCrateRest.htmAcupuncture and laser therapy can give the nerves a jump start on healing and of course, the more the nerves heal, the better he will walk. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/healingacupuncture.htmI found these exercise to be of great help in getting my Jeremy's legs moving again and you can do them yourself right at home. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/massagepassiveexercises.htmYou can also do water therapy. If you have a facility available that does underwater treadmill, that can be helpful. You can also do some of these exercises right in the bathtub, if your dog is small enough, or in a child's plastic swimming pool. If you have a large swimming pool available, you can get a swim vest for him. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/watertherapy.htmHere are tips on how to make your home back friendly for when he does start moving again. Remember, nerves can take a very long time to heal - think more in terms of months, even a year or more. It took my Jeremy three months to even move his feet after surgery, another three months to walk and I still saw improvements over a year later. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/protectback.htmPrayers for a full and speedy recovery for your dog.
