If you don't stop the Rimadyl and verify all the pain is really gone, then you may be delaying Rocco from graduation and worse yet is you may be giving a high powered med for no reason just subjecting Rocco to serious side effects. He needs to be off all meds for a week to prove there is no pain.... so you want that test of stopping all meds well before graduation day.

Thanks. I will tentatively stop the Rimadyl starting tomorrow morning.

Rocco has now been off Rimadyl for one week now and shows no signs of pain or discomfort. Just still kind of weak in the rear legs. His 8 weeks is up on Friday July 4th. Independence Day. How ironic!

Update and Questions... Rocco is doing very well. His 8 weeks graduation date was on July 4. Since then I have been letting him out of the crate sparingly around the house and bringing him up on the couch while I'm sitting on it. I'm still feeding him in the crate but may soon start to let him eat in the kitchen out of his regular bowl. As for walking, I have been walking him a little more each day and he's doing really well. He shows no signs of pain or exhaustion. I'm still using the sling and am wondering if I can start to go without it. He still doesn't have a normal gait. He walks almost normal and when I remove the sling he goes into an almost normal trot. It as if the sling is holding him back now. His only real issue is when he lifts his leg to pee, he sometimes isn't real stable with his plant foot, or the one holding himself up. He tumbles over sometimes because it's not centered and still a little weak. I'm thinking that as long as he's not hurting himself, it will just come with time? So can I start walking him without the sling? It would make life a lot easier because then I could walk both my guys at the same time!

Congratulations for sticking with all 8 weeks of crate rest to give that disc good opportunity to have strong scar tissue!!!
You may wish to follow the schedule Sabrina linked to of slowly working up lengths of walk time. The reason is those extra weeks are actually even a bit more time for the disc repair to be even more secure. Also the idea is you are observing and focusing on Rocco. So maybe walking them both together might be later on in the 4th week post graduation. Since he is stable walking, If possible when he lifts his leg to pee maybe just your hands could help him from tipping over??i

Congratulations John and Rocco!!! SO happy for you both and so glad to hear Rocco is feeling good. Remember, slow and steady wins the race. His gait may never be "normal" again, but who cares - as long as he is happy and pain free
